Winter Weather Advisory: A winter storm warning is in effect for North and Western Central Texas Monday, January 30 into Thursday, February 2. Weather reports predict below freezing temperatures, freezing rain, and/or sleet. Commercial power outages are possible.

On Tuesday, 1/31, the Austin, Brownwood, Lewisville, Midland/Odessa, Waco, San Marcos and Temple payment centers will be closed.

On Wednesday, 2/1, the Brownwood, Lewisville, Midland/Odessa, Waco and Temple payment centers will be closed. The Austin and San Marcos payment centers will open at 12pm CST. The San Antonio payment center will open at 10am CST.

On Thursday, 2/2, the Lewisville payment center will open at 12pm CST. The Brownwood, Midland/Odessa, Temple and Waco payment center will open at 10am CST. The Austin, San Antonio and San Marcos payment center will resume normal operations.

Does WiFi interference have your Internet speeds slowing down? Even with Gig speed internet, many factors influence your network’s performance, but there are a few easy tips you can follow to optimize and increase WiFi speeds.

What slows down WiFi?

Finding your router’s sweet spot will allow it to broadcast the strongest signal, because where you place your router matters.



Physical barriers like walls or appliances and the number of devices connected will all slow down the WiFi speed.

The further the signal has to go, or the more it has to travel through and around, the slower the speeds will be.

Improving WiFi speeds

Step 1: Move your router

Give your router the best seat in the house to optimize its performance:

  • Place your router in a central location up off the floor in an open space.
  • Keep your router away from windows, other electronics, heat sources, moisture, extreme cold, or large metal objects.
  • It’s best to have your router on the main floor where the Internet is frequently accessed, not in a basement or attic.

Step 2: Disconnect unused devices

Multiple devices divide up bandwidth like a pie, with each device taking the portion it needs at the time of use.

The more devices you have, the more WiFi speed is divided up.

Some devices can’t support higher speeds – which slows down all the others.

To see what speeds your device can support, check the owner’s manual or perform a web search using its model number.

Step 3: Optimize device performance

  • Restart your WiFi equipment regularly
  • Check to make sure wired connections are not loose
  • Turn off devices you’re not using so they don’t zap WiFi bandwidth
  • Close browser and clear cookies
  • Run regular virus scans to keep your devices clean

Step 4: Secure your WiFi

The number of people accessing the network at the same time, the number of connected devices, usage such as gaming vs. streaming video and music all impact the internet speed you’ll need for the best possible experience. Astound Broadband Internet advertised speeds are based upon a direct connection to the modem. Actual wireless performance will vary, and depends on many factors, including interference with other wireless devices, the amount of bandwidth others are using on your WiFi network and obstructions such as walls, doors, floors, furniture, fish tanks, appliances and other objects that are between you and the wireless router. Some devices cannot support today’s speeds which slows down WiFi for all other devices in the home. Most routers will slow down to the speed of your slowest device.

It depends. If you’re using a Data Over Cable Systems Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 2.0 or older modem and WiFi router than upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 or higher equipment (modem, router, gateway) may increase your internet speed as it allows for a much higher maximum throughput of data. A higher throughput may lead to faster download speeds. DOCSIS 4.0 is the latest DOCSIS technology available, which includes advanced performance-enhancing features that are not available on DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, or 3.0 devices.

Wired speeds are delivered when you plug an Ethernet cable from your modem or router directly into your device – typically a computer, laptop, television, gaming console or other Internet enabled device. When a device is connected with an Ethernet cable it can achieve its fastest speeds. Why? Because your Internet is physically attached to your device, there’s nothing coming between it and your Internet signal. A wired connection is always better and should be used wherever it makes sense to do so. Try to match each device with its best connection. PCs, laptops, media players and gaming consoles work best with a wired connection; mobile devices and tablets work best on WiFi.
