Frequently asked questions
What is symmetrical internet?
A symmetrical internet connection provides users with upload and download speeds that are the same. For example, with Symmetrical Gig Internet, your download speed is up to 940 Mbps and your upload speed will also be up to 940Mbps.
Can I use my own modem with symmetrical internet?
No, all equipment for symmetrical internet is supplied by Astound Broadband. A customer may use their own Wi-Fi router for symmetrical internet via the Ethernet port.
Why can’t I use my own modem with symmetrical internet?
Symmetrical speeds are delivered via fiber optic technology, which requires a different setup. Traditional modems are not used because internet is delivered over fiber and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is required to deliver service.
What is an ONT?
The ONT is a device that translates the fiber light signal into an electrical signal that can communicate with your in-home Wi-Fi device. This ONT is typically mounted against a wall or in an out-of-the-way area, with an Ethernet cable connecting it to your in-home Wi-Fi router. With an ONT you do not need a separate modem to communicate with your internet service provider (ISP).
Is an ONT a modem?
Technically speaking, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is not a modem. However, for Fiber Internet, an ONT acts similar to a modem because it communicates with an internet service provider (ISP).
Why should you consider a symmetrical internet connection?
A symmetrical internet connection might be right if you need:
- Fast upload speeds to share files, post to social media, upload videos, and do everything that your daily routine requires.
- Service that delivers excellent upload speeds for sharing content and images, high-quality game play or doing livestreams to viewers, followers and more.
- Reliable, fast download and upload speeds to school or work-from-home and connect with professors, teachers, coworkers, clients or customers.
Why would having a fast upload speed matter?
Upload speed determines how fast you can send, or upload, data from your computer or device to the internet. This includes uploading files, such as pictures and videos to social media or homework assignments, but upload speeds are also important for video conferencing and online gaming.
Are symmetrical speeds available everywhere?
For residents in eligible areas, we strive to bring Fiber service as quickly as possible. Fiber Internet is currently available in a number of cities and apartment buildings in areas of Washington, Oregon, California, Chicago and Texas.
