Stonepeak to become majority shareholder in new venture combining GFiber and Astound Broadband; Alphabet to retain minority stake

Mountain View, CA, and New York, NY, March 11, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — GFiber (formerly Google Fiber) and Stonepeak today announced that they have entered an agreement to combine GFiber with Astound Broadband, creating a leading independent fiber provider. The new company will be majority owned by Stonepeak, an investment firm specializing in infrastructure and real assets. Alphabet will remain a significant minority shareholder, reflecting its confidence in GFiber’s growth opportunity and leadership.

The combined business will be led by the existing GFiber executive team, utilizing their expertise in high-speed fiber innovation to manage the combined network footprint. The combination of GFiber’s high-growth metropolitan networks with Astound’s established infrastructure, team and capabilities creates a highly complementary, national network platform.

This agreement advances GFiber’s mission of redefining internet connectivity and represents a major step toward its goal of operational and financial independence. GFiber will have the external capital and strategic focus needed to accelerate its next phase of growth, expanding its customer-first approach and pioneering fiber technology across the country.

“Building on GFiber’s success as a leading independent US fiber internet provider, this is an exciting next phase of their growth,” said Ruth Porat, President & Chief Investment Officer, Alphabet and Google. “GFiber will now have the opportunity to provide better internet access to more communities across the country as they combine with Stonepeak’s Astound business, while continuing to provide their award winning customer experience.”

“GFiber has always been about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for internet speed and service,” said Dinni Jain, GFiber CEO. “This partnership with Astound and Stonepeak is the next step in our decade-long mission to redefine what customers can expect from their internet provider. It’s a strategic opportunity to scale our customer-focused approach to connect more households to a truly different type of internet service.”

“We are excited to be working with GFiber and Alphabet on this transaction,” said Andrew Thomas, Senior Managing Director at Stonepeak. “This partnership will be transformational for the businesses, with GFiber and Astound’s complementary networks and extraordinary teams enabling the combined company to better serve millions of customers and the demand for a next generation network and ubiquitous connectivity. Stonepeak has a strong track record of building world-class digital infrastructure and we look forward to supporting the company with Alphabet as a co-investor.”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals and is expected to close in Q4 of this year.

February 13, 2026

Tacoma, WA — In partnership with Pierce County, Astound will soon begin construction to expand the availability of high-speed internet to the Nisqually region. When construction is complete, more than 3,500 homes will gain access to broadband internet, offering symmetrical internet speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second. During the coming months, Astound will build 113 miles of infrastructure, including a mix of aerial and underground fiber construction.

Construction will take place in the following areas:

  • Along the Highway 702 corridor from the junction of Highway 507 (McKenna) to Highway 161 (Clear Lake), including main roads (Harts Lake Road South, Allen Road South, 8th Street South, Eatonville Cutoff Road, Jensen Road East) and smaller side streets within those areas.
  • Along the Highway 7 corridor from 304th Street East (Johnson’s Corner) south to Cranberry Lake, including main roads (340th Street East, Christensen Muck Road E, 320th Street East) and smaller side streets within those areas.

Residents in the above areas can expect to see lane impacts including certified flaggers and signage, shoulder closures, and traffic lane shifts. Please slow down through work areas and follow all posted signs and flaggers. Construction is expected to be completed later this year.

This project is a $13.3 million public-private partnership, with Pierce County contributing $7.97 million from federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and Astound covering the remaining $5.33 million.

The partnership is the latest in Pierce County’s initiative to facilitate broadband infrastructure expansion to underserved areas of Pierce County. This program combines County funding with broadband service providers to build infrastructure for the benefit and quality of life of residents and to enhance economic opportunities for local businesses.

Astound Brings Advanced Fixed Wireless Internet to 26,000 Homes Across Northern California

December 10, 2025

Astound Launches WiFi Network, Delivering High-Speed Internet to Davis, Area Communities

DAVIS, CAAstound, a recognized leader in internet, WiFi, mobile, TV, and fiber-optic solutions, today announced the launch of a powerful new fixed wireless network to expand high-speed internet and WiFi access to more than 26,000 homes in Davis and nearby areas of Yolo and Placer Counties, effective immediately. This includes more than 2,000 homes in predominantly rural areas of the counties that have not had access to high-speed internet and WiFi service before.  This marks Astound’s first service offering in the Davis market.

As of December 8, more than 26,000 homes in areas that include Davis, Penryn, Auburn, Newcastle, Lincoln, Granite Bay, and Roseville can access reliable internet and WiFi with speeds up to 500 megabits per second.  Astound engineered its fixed wireless network specifically to overcome both the barriers of rural geography and poor legacy infrastructure in more urban areas. Unlike mobile-based or satellite options, it delivers fast, low-latency, professionally installed internet and WiFi that performs reliably in real-world conditions that involve such variables as dense trees, hills, or long distances from fiber hubs. This launch is part of Astound’s broader commitment to bridge the digital divide and deliver connectivity to communities that have long faced limited options.

Astound’s fixed wireless offering will quickly extend its internet and WiFi services to homes in areas without direct access to its physical fiber network, as well as provide another reliable option for areas that can access the traditional network.  It delivers high-speed connectivity designed to seamlessly support video conferencing, streaming, online learning, remote work, and more digital experiences. Moreover, its deployment can occur in a matter of days, using existing towers or poles, as compared to timelines of months or longer that traditional fiber construction requires.

“Davis is a vibrant market, and this offering enables us to enter this community and others in Yolo and Placer counties by providing immediate access to fast and reliable connectivity at a strong value,” said Jared Sonne, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Astound West Region. “Fixed wireless offerings are ideal for areas in Northern California, whether growing suburbs or rural towns, which have long endured lack of choice and slow connectivity speeds. Here and throughout the West Coast, our goal is to deliver a dependable service that supports remote work, online learning, telehealth, and everyday digital life.”

Affordable & Accessible

Pricing is $40/month, 3-year price guarantee, Whole Home WiFi eero equipment included, unlimited data and no contracts.  For qualifying households, Astound also offers affordable internet packages through its Internet First program — designed to support qualified families, seniors, students, and veterans.

Award-Winning Internet

Astound is recognized in the 2025 PCMag Readers’ Choice Awards for outperforming major national providers across 16 categories. For 11 years, customers have consistently rated Astound as the best cable Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the country. These rankings reflect the voices of real customers — PCMag readers who rated their experience on speed, service, value, and satisfaction.
