A Year of “Firsts” – AGAIN!

December 19, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Here’s a sample of the Parkland boys basketball team that appeared on a recent “SportsTalk” show that was broadcast live on both ATVN and live-streamed for free on our YouTube channel…

For anyone, assuming that our 2022’s “year of firsts” with the Astound TV Network’s Sports team was just a flash in the pan, think again.

Last year around this time, we posted a series of “first” … details of our expanded coverage of the student athletes in the ATVN viewing area during the previous 12 months.

We promised we were going to up the ante in 2023.

Did we do what we said we were going to do?

Let’s take a look at the following accomplishments and additions to our broadcast and programming lineups by the Astound TV Network crew during the past 12 months…

  • our first ever District XI girls softball championship doubleheader
  • more high school baseball than ever before, including our first foray past the first round state baseball playoff game and exclusive coverage of the Liberty baseball team’s post-season run
  • our network’s first ever girls volleyball doubleheader championship
  • Our network’s first ever league girls semifinal basketball games…and we did them for BOTH the EPC and the Colonial League
  • expanded coverage of our local teams, with more schools being represented in each sports season that we broadcast than in any other year of our station’s history
  • thanks to some new, creative scheduling techniques…more high school football games than ever before
  • ditto for high school basketball and wrestling last winter (and even more planned for 2024!)
  • The first EVER women’s wrestling match broadcast
  • The first girls/boys wrestling doubleheader ever to be broadcast
  • we covered at least one game for EVERY school in our Lehigh Valley coverage area while still bringing you the best games/matches from each season; something our network never before accomplished
  • we brought you more league and district playoff games than ever before
  • our first-ever “all features” edition of our SportsTalk program, with exclusive interviews with EVERY sports team in the our coverage areas during the fall and spring sports seasons

And, oh, by the way, we also launched FREE streaming of all of our live games, with all of our studio shows and remote productions available to watch for free at any time for Astound video customers through ATVN On-Demand.

We did it all while also bringing you just as many Lafayette University sports events, Blue Mountain League baseball and Grandview Speedway racing as we have done in the past.  We also continued to bring you our traditional sports season “previews” and “recaps” SportsTalk shows as in previous years, along with having great guests and special interviews on our show throughout the year.

Plans are already underway to do even more local sports – and even more “firsts” – in 2024, along with new and innovative ways to feature the special people in the Astound viewing area. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an exciting ride for local sports fans and ATVN viewers in the coming year.

Until then, enjoy your holiday season and keep your expectations high for the ATVN in 2024.

CARNES’ CORNER – Season 2

December 7, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Last year one of our new additions to the Astound TV Network was launching a new video podcast promoting and showcasing girls basketball in the Eastern Pennsylvania region.

We’re honored once again to have Liberty Head Coach Jarrett Carnes back with us once again this winter to host his own segment and share his views and insights on local basketball.

Coach Carnes also has a few surprises in store for this us for his 2023-24 shows (details on that to come in a few weeks).

Here is the season two premiere of “Coach Carnes’ Corner” in which we take a look at new coaches in the area and Jarrett gives you his teams and players to keep an eye on this winter…

Check back for more of Coach Carnes’ insights and highlights on girls basketball in a few weeks!

Also, check back to “The Shop” in a few days for more local sports news and opinions on other sports, plus highlights recent games broadcast on ATVN!

Football Polls 2023: FINAL RESULTS

November 20, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Before we look at the final results of this fall’s EPC and Colonial Leagues high school football polls, a quick reminder that starting next week at “The SportsTalk Shop,” we will start showcasing some of the best football plays of teams inside the ATVN footprint from this past season.

Make sure you bookmark this page and check back over the next several weeks as we post highlights!

Now, here’s a look at our “final” poll results for 2023.

EPC TOP 5
  1. Nazareth
  2. Parkland
  3. Emmaus
  4. Bethlehem Catholic
  5. Whitehall

Eligible Teams (in no particular order):

Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic, Easton, Freedom, Liberty, Dieruff, Allen, Allentown Central Catholic, Parkland, Whitehall, Emmaus, and Nazareth.

COMMENTS:  Both Parkland and Nazareth participated in a battle for the ages for last weekend’s District XI 6A championship–a game that truly was disappointing that one team’s season had to come to an end.  Both the Blue Eagles and the Trojans featured two of the best senior classes that I have ever seen in my 20-plus years of calling games.

That being said, both Nazareth and Parkland have an abundance of talent coming back ready to fill some big shoes.  Parkland’s TJ Lawrence may have turned in the most complete performance of any freshman in eastern Pennsylvania. The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, might have the best trio at quarterback, running back and wide receiver going into next year (Peyton Falzone, Marquez Wimberly, Caleb Newsome.)

Emmaus also impressed me how they battled back from a tough 1-3 start to reach the playoffs.  They have a number of good returning players for next season and should be right among those final four teams again next year in the district playoffs.

Bethlehem Catholic pulled off one of the biggest wins of the year by upsetting defending champion Central Catholic in the 4A title game. With the Vassa brothers returning, along with several strong lineman and key defensive players, I would expect them also to be playing deep in November a year from now.

Whitehall also battled back following a bad loss to Becahi week two and played well the rest of the season.  In all probability, the Zephyrs will probably move up and play in the 6A classification next fall, but have the returning talent to be a major player in 2024.

COLONIAL TOP 4
  1. Northwestern
  2. Southern Lehigh
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Bangor

Eligible Teams (in no particular order):

Bangor, Pen Argyl, Notre Dame – Green Pond, Wilson, Catasauqua, Salisbury, Saucon Valley, Northwestern, Northern Lehigh and Southern Lehigh.

COMMENTS:  As we mentioned a few weeks ago, when we had Northwestern as our number one team while others had Southern Lehigh, Palmerton or other schools atop their polls, Northwestern has a very special team this year and they’ve proven it with big victory after big victory over very good teams.

They will be just one of two teams from our region to move on into the quarterfinal round of the PIAA playoffs this upcoming weekend.

Bangor once again reached the district semi-finals this fall. Even with the departure of Head Coach Paul Reduzzi, the Slaters looked to be back and remain one of the most competitive teams in the colonial league for 2024.

(We never announce nor release the names of our non-media voters as we randomly select representatives from different school districts each year to get their honest opinions on the local football landscape while avoiding any thoughts of retribution or potential “bulletin board” material.  Our “media voters” usually reveal themselves when we have the pleasure of having them on our weekly SportsTalk program, seen on Thursday nights on the Astound TV Network, is streamed line on YouTube Live and is available to watch at any time for free through ATVN on Demand.)

Be on the lookout for some exciting news concerning our local coverage of upcoming winter sports on ATVN starting next week.

In the meantime, best of luck to our remaining local teams still playing and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Girls Wrestling Overview by Cameron Nunez

November 16, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

EDITOR’S NOTE:   Before we bring you the return of Cameron Nunez to our blog pages for this winter season – with an emphasis on local girls wrestling, a quick reminder that we will have a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the future of ATVN programming.

Tune into Thursday’s “SportsTalk” starting at 7pm on ATVN.  The show will also be streamed live on our YouTube Channel (@AstoundTVNetwork).

One of the most difficult aspects of being a freshman in college is adjusting to the lifestyle of a college student. As a sophomore in college, I believe this is true, but what I believe is even more difficult is adjusting to this new lifestyle while also being a new student-athlete, particularly as a female wrestler. When I arrived at East Stroudsburg University (ESU), I needed to learn new workout regimens, time management techniques, and eating habits. The largest difference, however, was having to learn a completely new wrestling style. Not only did I go from Folkstyle to Freestyle, but I also had to master the Freestyle scoring system.

Folkstyle was the only style of wrestling I was aware of for the first seventeen years of my life. I didn’t learn about freestyle wrestling until the summer of 2020. Here are some important distinctions I’ve discovered during the last three years.

Women’s Folkstyle ranges from beginner to high school level. In this method, it is more important to try to control your opponent while on top, while your opponent on the bottom is attempting to escape. Locking your hands in specific positions is prohibited in Folkstyle and will result in a point being deducted from your score. It is generally not advisable to throw your opponent, but it is prohibited to suplex, or arch your opponent over your head.

Another way to lose points in Folkstyle is by passive wrestling, sometimes known as stalling; you get a warning and then lose points after the second call. I believe the largest distinction exists between the various scoring systems/periods for each style. Folkstyle wrestling consists of three two-minute bouts. One point is awarded for an escape, two points for a takedown or reversal, and two to three points for a near fall. Three team points are awarded for a decision (1–7-point difference), four team points for a major decision (8–14-point difference), five team points for a tech fall (15-point difference), and six points for a pin (opponents’ shoulders are flat on the mat).

Meanwhile, women can be seen competing in Freestyle from college to the Olympic level. The main goal of this style is to expose your opponent’s back while remaining on the bottom and avoiding being turned/exposed. Unlike Folkstyle, it is permitted to lock your hands at any point throughout the bout when wrestling freestyle. One cool feature is that you may toss your opponent, whether it’s a simple move like a lateral drop or a complex move like a suplex.  Instead of stalling and giving up points right away, in freestyle, one wrestler is placed on a thirty-second shot clock, and if neither athlete scores any points during that time, the non-shot clock opponent is granted a point, and the other passive wrestler is cautioned.

The scoring system/periods for freestyle are more intricate; you wrestle for two three-minute periods separated by a thirty-second break. You get one point if you push your opponent out of the circle or reverse them. You get two points if you take them down to their elbows or knees. You also get two points for exposing the opponent;s back using techniques like a leg lace.  You get four points if you take down your opponent from their feet to their back. Lastly, you get five points if you throw your opponent using complex moves like a suplex. Even team score differs significantly—for a team score, you score three team points for a decision (1–9 -point difference). There are no major decisions in freestyle; instead, a tech fall is a ten-point differential worth four team points, and a pin is worth five team points. One important team score distinction is that if you score a point at any point during the match, you receive one team point even if you lose the match. I enjoy freestyle wrestling because there is no opportunity for passive wrestling, which makes it more entertaining to watch, and if you are not good on the bottom after fifteen seconds, you are placed back on your feet.

Some not-so-complicated changes for me were that in high school, we normally practiced once a day, with a lift occasionally added. Meanwhile, we train/work out many times every day at ESU. We have a lift in the morning or at night twice a week, followed by a later practice. On other days, we practice in the morning in the room or pool, then practice later in the day. Even if we only have one practice, I will try to get in two or three sessions, whether cardio or lifting. Because I work out several times a day, time management is essential in my life.  Because I just practiced once a day or had matches barely an hour away in high school, I had plenty of time to finish my homework or study. Meanwhile, in college, I'm juggling numerous classes, wrestling, preparing for matches that are at least two hours away, and now clinical hours for my degree. I spend many nights at the library, which is not fun, but you got to do what you need to do. The most significant lesson I learnt was the importance of eating a well-balanced diet. Because many of the matches I wrestled in high school were Madison style, making weight was not a problem. In college, my freshman year, I lost so much weight quickly by eating a balanced diet and working out that I always weighed at least one pound under my weight class. Despite everything, I grew into a better version of myself.

Football Polls & A Major Announcement

November 13, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Before we talk about our next-to-last week of high school football polls on the Astound TV Network, a special programming note for Astound video customers.

For this Thursday SportsTalk, ATVN lead football analyst Mike Joseph will be our special guest to recap all of last weekend’s high school football playoff games, and provide a preview of this weekend’s District 11 6A and 3A Championships.

Additionally, Mike will provide insights into this weekend’s Lafayette vs. Lehigh game.

AND…

…we will have a MAJOR announcement concerning our local sports coverage and the future of live broadcasting sports and other specialty programming on ATVN.

Tune in this Thursday LIVE at 7:00 p.m. for all the details! We will also have more insight on this big news and details on how you can watch this Thursday’s show ONLINE… details coming your way right here on our website.

Check back to “The Shop” next week for the final week of our polls (along with a check on how we did by comparison with our preseason polls) as the playoffs continue and we start to lose our local schools as the games roll on.

Our playoff coverage continues this weekend as we will be bringing you the second round of high school football playoff coverage

On Friday, we’ll have live coverage of the District XI 6A final and a rematch of one of our best regular season games of 2023 as Nazareth looks to avenge a 7-point loss to undefeated Parkland (these two teams have faced off in the district playoffs the last two years as well, with each team winning once).  Also, we will have the annual college battle between Lafayette and Lehigh on Saturday.

(We were also hoping to bring you coverage of Whitehall, Northwestern and Bethlehem Catholic’s playoff games this Saturday, but because of our contractual obligations with Lafayette and the decision to move all the local games to Friday precludes us from being able to broadcast those schools’ games.)

Now here’s a look at our polls along with our criteria that we use.

This year, we are once again going to break down the two polls into EPC and Colonial League schools, within the Astound TV broadcast area.  With the Colonial teams cross-scheduling and playing teams from the Schuylkill League and the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playing different “cross-over” teams, our poll will be an interesting barometer for teams in the Lehigh Valley since many local teams will not have the same opponents throughout their schedules.

Below we have high school polls for both leagues in the ATVN viewing area, along with the listing of all of the teams that are included in our respective categories.

EPC TOP 5
  1. Parkland
  2. Nazareth
  3. Emmaus
  4. Bethlehem Catholic
  5. Whitehall

Eligible Teams (in no particular order):

Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic, Easton, Freedom, Liberty, Dieruff, Allen, Allentown Central Catholic, Parkland, Whitehall, Emmaus, and Nazareth.

COLONIAL TOP 4
  1. Northwestern
  2. Southern Lehigh
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Bangor

Other schools receiving votes: Catasauqua

Eligible Teams (in no particular order):

Bangor, Pen Argyl, Notre Dame – Green Pond, Wilson, Catasauqua, Salisbury, Saucon Valley, Northwestern, Northern Lehigh and Southern Lehigh.

Be sure to check back to the “upcoming events” section on our website and check it frequently for any changes and for our ongoing broadcast schedule information throughout the postseason.

HS Football Polls ‘23 – Week 11

November 6, 2023 By Chris Michael Leave a Comment

Before we look at this week’s high school football polls, a moment to brag just a little bit about the insights that the ATVN pollsters give us each week (again, no, I don’t voice so this isn’t a self-congratulatory mention).

Last week when Northwestern beat Southern Lehigh – quite soundly – many of the other local media had to admit a “shake-up” in their polls or talk about a “major upset” in their Lehigh Valley rankings.

However, the people who rank our poll each week have had Northwestern (not Notre Dame, Southern Lehigh or anybody else) as their number one team in our rankings each week since our pre-season poll way back in mid-August, before the season started.

Not only did our pollsters accurately predict the Tigers and Spartans correctly as our small school “one and two” but they still have the same number three and four teams.

And…for our big schools, four of the five teams they selected back in August are still listed.

Those people who we are blessed to have participate in our polls (and we do thank them for their time and efforts) should get the recognition they deserve for correctly selecting the top teams in each poll all through the season.

Can they remain as close to perfect as they could possibly be with two weeks left to spare?

Check back next week for the final two weeks of predictions as the playoffs continue and we start to lose our local schools as the games roll on.

Our playoff coverage continues this weekend as we will be bringing you the second round of high school football playoff coverage

On Friday, we’ll have live coverage of the District XI 6A semi-final matchup between Emmaus and Parkland (a rematch of these two teams from two weeks aga in the regular season finale).  Also, we will have the 6A semifinal between Northampton and Nazareth.

Keep checking back to the “SportsTalk Shop” over the next few weeks for highlights of our recent games as seen on the Astound TV Network (video customers can see these games for free through Video-On-Demand for up to two months from the initial airdates!)
