Fiber-powered internet vs 5G home internet

Astound’s ultra-fast internet is powered by a wired cable or fiber connection that provides a more consistent performance and is less vulnerable to signal interference than a wireless connection. Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), also called 5G home internet, is a wireless technology that uses 5G technology. Since 5G signals are airwaves, data transmission rates are typically slower than wired connections.

Frequently asked questions

5G home internet uses 5G technologies from wireless cellular networks to deliver 5G internet into the home. Breakthroughs from 4G to 5G have enabled multiple data streams to be transmitted and received simultaneously.

5G home internet speeds range from 40 Mbps to 300 Mbps. However, 5G home internet speeds vary depending on signal strength, network coverage and device compatibility. Traditional home internet services, such as fiber or cable, offer speeds up to 2000 Mbps in select areas.

5G home internet speeds vary depending on congestion. During peak usage times or in densely populated areas, 5G internet speeds may be slower due to increased demand.

Fiber provides robust and consistent internet connectivity. It’s transmitted by light signals and electromagnetic interference rarely affects fiber cables – unlike other technologies.

As 5G home internet uses radio frequencies, the distances the signals can travel is limited. Buildings, trees and other objects block signals. The further you are from the radio towers, the weaker your internet signal will be.

Wired internet like fiber to the home gives you higher bandwidth, lower loss of signal, reduced latency (the time it takes for data to travel from one point to another), and greater reliability.

Compared to a cable or fiber ISP, 5G technology is less expensive to distribute. However, it’s more costly for individual users. 5G internet is not uniform in speed, meaning that obstacles, coverage, distance from towers or transmitters and other factors influence your actual experience of internet speed in the home.

The major networks providing 5G internet offer prices ranging from $25 to $70, which may include discounts depending on the carrier. However, it’s important to note that some providers include data caps in their plans.

After using a predetermined amount of GB, your ISP will deprioritize your connection, meaning your speeds will be much slower. If you think you’ll be streaming, gaming, or working from home and need a stable connection—a fiber-powered connection will deliver consistent speed.
