For over a hundred years some of the greatest video treasures of all time have been produced. Some have been lost in the sands of time and others, soon to be rediscovered, will become fan favorites for a whole new generation.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Each week we will feature just one of the many hidden gems that you can see on ATVN with insights and commentaries on classic television shows and legendary cinematic performances.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Many people know Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III on the TV sit-com <\/span>Gilligan\u2019s Island<\/i><\/b>, but it was actually a \u201cmillionaire-like\u201d voice for another character that gave him his \u201cbig break\u201d in show business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alan Young (who would later play \u201cWilbur\u201d for television\u2019s <\/span>Mr. Ed<\/i><\/b>), retold the story a few years ago on SirusXM\u2019s \u201cRadio Classics\u201d of how he was developing his own hit radio show bearing his name in the early 1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Backus had some small, yet versatile roles on various programs in the early days of radio, Young realized that his own softer, humbled and more-reserved on-air radio voice needed a foil for his new show.\u00a0 Young said he would need someone that would stick out with an over-the-top delivery and convey an air of snootiness, proudness and arrogance–to be a sharp contrast to Young\u2019s much quieter on-air persona for his new show to work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enter Thurston Howell III \u2026 well, actually his name on <\/span>The Alan Young Show<\/i><\/b> was Hubert Updike III.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the rest was history.<\/span><\/p>\n

From that hit show, Backus began getting more prominent appearances and became a featured guest-star on some of the other top radio programs of the era.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then, television and major motion pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, he took on the male lead role in <\/span>I Married Joan<\/i><\/b>, followed a few years later by his own variety program, <\/span>The Jim Backus Show<\/i><\/b>, which aired on ABC in 1957 and 1958.<\/span><\/p>\n

His silver screen appearances included <\/span>Deadline \u2013 U.S.A.<\/i><\/b> with Humphrey Bogart<\/span>,<\/span><\/i> Pat and Mike <\/i><\/b>with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn<\/span>, Rebel Without a Cause <\/i><\/b>(as James Dean\u2019s on-screen father,)<\/span> The Pied Piper of Hamelin, <\/i><\/b>John Goldfarb, Please Come Home<\/i><\/b> \u00a0<\/i><\/b>and<\/span> It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Backus\u2019s versatile voice acting skills also made him an obvious choice to take over the role of a brand new cartoon character, as he brought Mr. Mcgoo to life — for over 40 years — to children of all ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1963, Jim took on the role of Mr. Howell on the <\/span>Gilligan\u2019s Island<\/i><\/b> television series and in three subsequent made-for-TV movies made in the late 1970s and 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n

He even recreated his \u201cmillionaire\u201d persona when he reunited with his \u201cGilligan\u201d co-star Natillie Shafer (aka Mrs. Howell) for a series of popular commercials for Orville Redenbacher\u2019s popcorn in the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Backus\u2019s last acting appearance was in the final \u201cGilligan\u201d movie, <\/span>The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island<\/i><\/b>. By this time Backus was suffering from Parkinson\u2019s Disease, and his role was reduced to having a brief comedic line at the very end of the film.<\/span><\/p>\n

Legend has it that once the director yelled \u201ccut,\u201d Backus turned to his long-time co-star, Dawn Wells (\u201cMary Ann\u201d) and asked about his short cameo appearance.\u00a0 \u201cAm I still funny?\u201d he asked, to which Wells gave the beloved star a hug, then went off by herself in tears, upset at seeing him in such a frail state after years of working with him.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Jim Backus is not a familiar name to today\u2019s media audience, it\u2019s hard to find any medium he did not make an impact in, from 1944 until his death in 1989, whether it be in radio, cartoons, voice-overs, television or film.<\/span><\/p>\n
