Some have been lost in the sands of time and others, soon to be rediscovered, will become fan favorites for a whole new generation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each week we will feature just one of the many hidden gems that you can see on the Astound TV Network with insights and commentaries on classic television shows and legendary cinematic performances.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Nelson is another character who worked in the entertainment industry from 1926 right up until his death in 1986.\u00a0 While the name may not ring a bell, it\u2019s hard to imagine the early days of television without his memorable contributions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Brandon Nelson (he never adopted a \u201cstage name\u201d) on May 6th, 1911 in Colorado Spring, Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank\u2019s signature deep voice came to him at an early age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 15, he got a job portraying a \u201cthirtysomething\u201d character on a radio drama on KOA AM in Denver.\u00a0 By 18 he moved to Hollywood and immediately got jobs portraying leading men in radio drama series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first experiences in the genre in which he would work for nearly the rest of his career occurred three years later when he was hired for the serial comedy show, <\/span><b>Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a vehicle created to showcase Groucho and Chico Marx.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His venerable voice allowed him to portray characters on many of radio\u2019s most popular comedy shows, like <\/span><b>Fibber Magee and Molly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as dramas, like <\/span><b>Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelson continued to attract various roles on radio throughout the 1930s, but became a frequent \u201cguest star\u201d on <\/span><b>The Jack Benny Show,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> although his characters were never given a name.\u00a0 He would simply play general characters to help advance that evening\u2019s show\u2019s plot, but his versatility allowed him to play different characters from week to week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early 1940s Frank was portraying a train ticket clerk (another role he would return to throughout the program\u2019s run on radio and TV).\u00a0 When Benny approached him to buy a ticket, Nelson responded with a loud and ecstatic, \u201cyyyyyeeeeeeeeesssssssss\u201d&#8230;and the radio audience went wild with laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next few years, Nelson would garnish some of the biggest laughs ever heard on radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably his biggest laugh was when Announcer Don Wilson mispronounced a man\u2019s name in the news as \u201cDrear Pewson.\u201d\u00a0 When Nelson\u2019s character of the day arrived on the scene and ask who he was, Frank improved by saying, \u201cwho do you think I am, Drear Pewson,\u201d and the cast and audience erupted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Nelson was featured in a few films in the early 1950s, he mostly stayed on the small screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of his most popular television appearances was when he was on a parody of <\/span><b>Perry Mason<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trying a \u201cchicken murder\u201d case against Raymond Burr himself. Nelson \u201cwon\u201d the case when he got \u201cPerry\u201d to admit that he was the killer himself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelson\u2019s versatility won the sometimes incredibly high standards of Lucille Ball, who used Nelson in six different characters during the first several seasons of <\/span><b>I Love Lucy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and asked Frank back frequently for her first solo spinoff, <\/span><b>The Lucy Show.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early 1960s, McDonald\u2019s hired Nelson as their main character on their commercials and would frequently utilize his trademark, \u201cyyyyeessssssss\u201d to get a laugh.\u00a0 His legendary voice would lend itself to numerous characters on some of televisions most popular cartoon shows, including <\/span><b>The Jetsons <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>The Flintstones.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank continued acting in shows, frequently using his trademark lines and demenours in television shows through the 60s and 70s, with his last guest appearance on the Linda Lavin-centered sitcom, <\/span><b>Alice.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While his last on-screen role was in 1986\u2019s <\/span><b>Malibu Bikini Shop, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was released a month after he passed away, he was still referred to frequently in more contemporary shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When John Stewart hosted <\/span><b>The Daily Show,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he often used Frank\u2019s trademark \u201cyyyesssss\u201d and other similar traits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Simpsons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based characters on all of Nelson\u2019s mannerisms and would give a nod to the late actor by crediting those characters names as \u201cthe Frank Nelson type\u201d or the \u201cYes, Sir\u201d guy.\u00a0 Many other cartoons use characters with many of Nelson\u2019s different quirks on their shows to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be on the lookout for Frank Nelson\u2019s signature voice and trademark sayings in roles in films like, <\/span><b>The Lucy Show, The Jack Benny Program, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other projects seen on the Astound TV Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To view the complete rundown of classic programming on ATVN, check out the weekly listings here on our website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The views expressed in this blog are<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Astound Broadband or any other agency, organization, employer or company.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0For over a hundred years some of the greatest video treasures of all time have been produced.
