For over a hundred years some of the greatest video treasures of all time have been produced. Some have been lost in the sands of time and others, soon to be rediscovered, will become fan favorites for a whole new generation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Each week we will feature just one of the many hidden gems that you can see on ATVN with insights and commentaries on classic television shows and legendary cinematic performances.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

One of the classic television shows \u201cnew to ATVN\u201d this fall is one of the first successful drama programs of the medium, <\/span>The Loretta Young Show<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building on Loretta\u2019s blockbuster success in films, including her late 1940\u2019s hits like <\/span>The Farmer\u2019s Daughter<\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Come To The Stable<\/a>, <\/b>NBC decided to try a brand new idea to initiate an anthology dramatic series with Young as the host\/star.\u00a0 (She was nominated for Oscars for both of those films and won for the former movie.\u00a0 We\u2019ll have more on Young\u2019s lengthy and tremendously successful cinematic accomplishments coming up in a future \u201cShowplace\u201d blog entry).<\/span><\/p>\n

The initial name for her program was called <\/span>Letters To Loretta<\/b>.\u00a0 The original premise for the show started with Young speaking directly to the audience.\u00a0 She began the show by reading her \u201cfan mail,\u201d which included a question addressed to her.\u00a0 In answering the \u201cfan\u2019s\u201d question, it started that episode’s story for the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only did this unique start to every episode resonate well with audiences, but Young\u2019s lavish clothing and styles were all-the-rage for audiences, as they would tune in to see what stylish outfits and new hairstyles she would showcase each week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young would then often star in most episodes of the program, portraying a different character, only to return at the end of the show \u2013 as \u201cherself\u201d \u2013\u00a0 to \u201cwrap up\u201d the program and wish the audience a good night.<\/span><\/p>\n

Halfway through the program\u2019s first season, the show\u2019s name was changed to <\/span>The Loretta Young Show<\/b>, even though the practice of each program\u2019s letter kickstarting a new storyline lasted through the show\u2019s first five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young used her star power and cinematic influences to entice well-established movie stars onto her show (it was extremely rare for major film stars to guest star on 1950\u2019s television). \u00a0 Additionally, the show attracted young stars who would go on to become major personalities in their own right.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just a sample of the featured performers on this program include:\u00a0 Van Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, Ellen Burnstyn<\/a><\/strong>, Claude Akins<\/strong><\/a>, Eddie Albert<\/a><\/strong>, Ethel Merman<\/a><\/strong>, Mike Connors<\/a><\/strong>, Chuck Connors<\/a><\/strong>, Mae Clarke<\/a><\/strong>, Jackie Coogan<\/a><\/strong>, William Frawley<\/a><\/strong>, Dennis Hopper<\/a><\/strong>, Charles Bronson<\/a><\/strong> and many others!<\/span><\/p>\n

The program was also well-received by viewers and critics alike (it was ranked as the third-best dramatic TV series in the mid-1950s by \u201cBillboard\u201d magazine), but it also received strong financial support.\u00a0 The show\u2019s main sponsors were Procter and Gamble and Listerine (both companies still exist today) and the cigarette juggernaut, Phillip Morris, who, during their heyday, also backed other hit shows of the time period like <\/span>I Love Lucy<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Loretta Young Show <\/b>ran successfully for eight years and was always popular in the ratings throughout the show\u2019s run.\u00a0 However, for its final season, the show was opposite the wildly popular CBS comedy, the original <\/span>Candid Camera<\/b><\/a>, and Young\u2019s show was beaten soundly in the head-to-head Nielsen share numbers.\u00a0 Despite finishing with a very respectable amount of viewers, NBC summarily canceled the \u201cYoung\u201d after that eighth season wrapped up in 1961.<\/span><\/p>\n

The show immediately went into syndication and was also popular with 1960’s television viewers.\u00a0 However, Young ordered that the original introductions and \u201cwrap-ups\u201d be removed because she was afraid that her mid-1950s hair and wardrobe styles would date the show and hurt the re-runs\u2019 success.\u00a0 Thankfully those original introductions and wrap-arounds, once thought lost, now can be seen with the corresponding drama and the programs shown in their initial entirety on the Astound TV Network this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n
