Each week we will feature just one of the many hidden gems that you can see on ATVN with insights and commentaries on classic television shows and legendary cinematic performances.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You will probably have a chance to see George C. Scott<\/a><\/strong> in his iconic role as \u201cPatton<\/a><\/strong>\u201d in the film of the same name, traditionally shown around Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the Independence Day holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is a much different side to Scott\u2019s acting career in his role as Edward Rochester in the classic story told in the 1970 film <\/span>Jane Eyre<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, which you can see on ATVN.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story revolves around Eyre\u2019s character (portrayed by Susanna York<\/a><\/strong>, who would go on to play Superman\u2019s birth mother in the 1976 motion picture <\/span>Superman<\/i><\/a><\/strong>)–an orphan who is hired to serve as a governess for Rochester\u2013an English manor lord.\u00a0 The two eventually fall in love and decide to marry, but Rochester houses a dark secret from Eyre.\u00a0 When Jane discovers this enormous secret\u2026well, no spoilers here\u2013you\u2019ll have to watch the film for yourself!<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott\u2019s role as Rochester was not unlike many of his performances as strong-willed characters.\u00a0 For this role he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Lead Actor in an Anthology, Movie or Limited Series.\u00a0 But Scott\u2019s life was filled with extraordinary accomplishments.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to David Sheward\u2019s book, \u201cRage and Glory: The Volatile Life and Career of George C. Scott<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d this legendary actor was born on a kitchen table in the small town of Wise, Virginia.\u00a0 After a four-year stint with the Marine Corps from 1945 to 1949 and a brief venture into journalism, Scott developed the acting bug and quickly ascended to becoming a lead actor on the Broadway stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the 1950s were over, he captured his first Academy Award in Otto Perminger\u2019s <\/span>Antonomy of a Murder<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, which also starred James Stewart<\/a><\/strong>, Eve Arden<\/a><\/strong>, Lee Remick<\/a><\/strong>, Murray Hamelton<\/a><\/strong> and Orson Bean<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott owned the 1960s, starring in long-running shows on Broadway and classic films like <\/span>Dr. Strangeglove, or How I Stopped Worrying and Love The Bomb<\/a><\/strong>, The Bible: In the Beginning<\/a><\/strong>, The Crucible<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/i> and others.\u00a0 He was also a highly sought after television guest star, appearing in some of the 1960s most popular shows like <\/span>Ben Casey<\/a><\/strong>, The Virginian<\/a><\/strong>, The Naked City<\/a><\/strong>, The Road West<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/i> and frequently appeared on Bob Hope\u2019s celebrity specials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott would also go on to star as iconic characters after 1970, including Scrooge in<\/span> A Christmas Carol, <\/span><\/i>Benito Mussolini in<\/span> Mussolini: The Untold Story<\/a><\/strong>, <\/span><\/i>Fagin in <\/span><\/i>Oliver Twist<\/a><\/strong>,<\/span><\/i> The Beast in 1976\u2019s <\/span>Beauty and the Beast<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, Sherlock Holmes in <\/span>They Might Be Giants<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, the controversial Juror #3 in the 1997 remake of <\/span>12 Angry Men<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, and even returned to his role as Patton in the biopic\u2019s sequel, <\/span>The Last Days of Patton<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

But arguably his two greatest movie contributions came in 1970 when both <\/span>Patton <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> Jane Eyre <\/span><\/i>were released.<\/span><\/p>\n
