\t\t\t\t\u00a0For over a hundred years some of the greatest video treasures of all time have been produced. Some have been lost in the sands of time and others, soon to be rediscovered, will become fan favorites for a whole new generation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Each week we will feature just one of the many hidden gems that you can see on RCN TV with insights and commentaries on classic television shows and legendary cinematic performances.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In celebration of the birthday anniversary of Cary Grant<\/a> we continue last week\u2019s examination of the legendary actor\u2019s career.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Following his own personal dissatisfaction with <\/span>The Philadelphia Story<\/a>, <\/i><\/b>Grant appeared in the first of four movies under the direction of Alfred Hitchcock<\/a> in 1941\u2019s <\/span>Suspicion<\/i><\/b><\/a>.\u00a0 Like the former flick, Grant did not get along well with his co-star Joan Fontaine<\/a> and would never work with her again.\u00a0 Hitchcock was also critical of Grant, citing it was a mistake to cast him in the role.\u00a0 Ironically enough, Hitchcock would later criticize James Stewart<\/a> with the same offense 17 years later and referred to Stewart as \u201cno Cary Grant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That same year, Grant received his first Oscar nomination for <\/span>Penny Serenade<\/i><\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Turner Classic Movies, Grant also benefited largely from the film industry\u2019s production code for the 1944 dark comedy <\/span>Arsenic And Old Lace<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>The movie was based largely on the stage play but the film code would not allow for certain scenes to be shown.\u00a0 In its place, Director Frank Capra<\/a> would substitute loosely scripted exchanges where Grant would just have to go \u201cover the top\u201d and playup a made-shift scene instead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest example of this is at the film’s climax.\u00a0 The film code (in the 1940s) would never allows for murderers to get away without punishment in a comedic film, so the scene in which the \u201cold ladies\u201d are given poisonous wine to the police was replaced with Grant kissing his finance, running around the house exuberantly and running out into the street yelling \u201cCharge!\u201d (a humorous reference to a recurring joke throughout the film).<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Graham McCann autobiography <\/span>Cary Grant: A Class Apart<\/span>, Grant would later say \u201cArsenic\u201d was the worst performance of his career and he hated the dark subject matter (his character’s family was all insane).\u00a0 This might be because his real life mother was also institutionalized early in Grant\u2019s childhood.\u00a0 His father also left him on his own as a teenager when he found a higher paying job in another city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two of Grant\u2019s most memorable roles occurred in 1946\u2019s <\/span>Notorious <\/i><\/b><\/a>(co-starring Ingrid Bergman<\/a> and directed by Hitchcock) and 1947\u2019s <\/span>The Bishop\u2019s Wife<\/i><\/b><\/a> (with Loretta Young<\/a> and David Niven<\/a>).\u00a0 The following year Grant was named the fourth highest box office draw in the world, but his failure in films like <\/span>Monkey Business<\/i><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Dream Wife<\/i><\/b><\/a> led to the idea that his days as a leading man were over. Cary then left the film industry and didn\u2019t work at all for several years.<\/span><\/p>\n

His fortunes changed in 1955 when Alfred Hitchcock complained about Stewart\u2019s performance (for the first of two times) in the rebooting of his own film, <\/span>The Man Who Knew Too Much<\/i><\/b><\/a>.\u00a0 Grant would star in two Hitchcock-directed film classics, playing his usual suave, leading man persona, in <\/span>To Catch A Thief<\/i><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>North by Northwest<\/a>.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Ian Fleming<\/a> then approached Cary Grant about playing James Bond in 007\u2019s film debut, <\/span>Dr. No<\/i><\/b><\/a>, ironically after Grant\u2019s former co-star, David Niven turned down the role. But Fleming had to withdraw his offer when Grant said he would only portray the super spy in one film and would not commit to a lengthy film series.<\/span><\/p>\n

After starring in <\/span>Charade<\/i><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Father Goose<\/i><\/b><\/a>, h<\/span>e had become increasingly disillusioned with cinema in the 1960s, rarely finding a script which he approved of. He remarked: “I could have gone on acting and playing a grandfather or a bum, but I discovered more important things in life\u201d and dedicated his time to his daughter and grandchildren.\u00a0 According to Gary<\/span> Morecambe and Martin Sterling\u2019s book, <\/span>Cary Grant: In Name Only<\/span>,<\/span> they would go on to say that Grant knew after he had made <\/span>Charade<\/i><\/b> that the “Golden Age” of Hollywood was over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twenty-three years later, just hours before he was scheduled to appear on stage talking about his life, he suffered a stroke.\u00a0 Despite medical personnel on the site, Grant refused any treatment and died a few hours later.\u00a0 He was 82.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grant is regarded as one of the greatest Hollywood actors ever. To this day, he frequently is positioned in the top two or three spots in various film critics and media outlets \u201call-time\u201d greatest actors\u2019 listings.<\/span><\/p>\n
