{"id":84595,"date":"2021-03-30T16:55:57","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T16:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.web.rcn.net\/rcntv\/?p=84595"},"modified":"2023-02-24T16:49:17","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T16:49:17","slug":"baseball-yawn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astound.com\/atvn\/baseball-yawn\/","title":{"rendered":"Baseball (Yawn)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>The views expressed in this blog are<\/em> <em>those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of RCN or any other agency, organization, employer or company.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew up loving baseball.\u00a0 I played Little League, teeners, high school, Legion, college, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hometeamsonline.com\/teams\/default.asp?u=THEBLUEMOUNTAINLEAGUE&amp;p=home&amp;t=c&amp;s=baseball#:~:text=The%20Blue%20Mountain%20League%20represents%2075%20years%20of,but%20because%20they%20love%20the%20game%20of%20baseball.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue Mountain League<\/a> and, finally, succumbed to the \u201crigors\u201d of slow-pitch softball.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather\u2019s job gave him access to great seats at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/phillies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillies<\/a> games played at Connie Mack Stadium and I would be crazy with excitement when my dad, my grandfather, his boss and I would jump in the car and head to a Phillies game.\u00a0 I always brought my glove because our seats were so close to the action that I could envision a foul ball coming my way or even a player tossing me a ball that was no longer usable.<\/p>\n<p>Often, we would be right next to the opponents\u2019 dugout and we actually talked to players before the game.\u00a0 Add to that, my grandfathers\u2019 boss had a Cadillac with leather interior, power windows, and something called \u201ccruise control\u201d.\u00a0 Even the trip to and from was exciting.\u00a0 For a young boy, it just couldn\u2019t get any better.\u00a0 When we arrived back home, I just wanted to play catch with my dad and just prolong the day.\u00a0 The fact that it was usually around 11 PM curtailed all of my dad\u2019s desire to cooperate.\u00a0 To me, this was a perfect day.<\/p>\n<p>But something happened to the game.\u00a0 I no longer have ANY desire to take three hours (3:07 was the average length of a major league game last year) out of a day to watch baseball.\u00a0 It appears, according to attendance and viewership statistics, many people feel the same way.\u00a0 What happened?<\/p>\n<p>The game changed.\u00a0 Today, it is a game of strikeouts, long balls, pitching changes, unfair defense, and little action.\u00a0 Batters cannot get into or stay in the batter\u2019s box; pitchers take forever to throw the ball; strategy has been taken over by computers (I\u2019m sick of the word \u201canalytics\u201d); fielders overload one side of second base making even a base hit that much more difficult; the excitement of a real close play is diminished by instant replay.\u00a0 Did you know that nearly four of every 10 plate appearances ends with the baseball never being put into play?\u00a0 It just is not the same game.\u00a0 And everyone knows it!<\/p>\n<p>I think I write every year that changes are coming, but few ever make it to the majors.\u00a0 Here are some changes being proposed &#8211; most for the minor leagues only, which I, also, have pretty much never watched:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Automated ball-strike calls<\/li>\n<li>Restrictions on a pitcher throwing to first base<\/li>\n<li>Increasing the size of the bases by three inches<\/li>\n<li>In fielders must keep both feet on the infield dirt<\/li>\n<li>Two infielders must be on either side of second base<\/li>\n<li>Putting a runner on second base to start an extra inning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, these changes will occur in the minor leagues.\u00a0 The majors, for now, will not be affected.<\/p>\n<p>So forgive me if when the cry is given to \u201cPlay ball!\u201d, I will, at best, watch some late innings to catch the outcome because too much of the \u201cplay\u201d part is left out of the game.\u00a0 And, if that doesn\u2019t change, I will continue to, also, be left out of the game \u2013 a game I once loved!<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Congratulations to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acchs.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allentown Central Catholic Vikings<\/a> for winning a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PIAA<\/a> 4A basketball championship on Thursday night. It was the first Lehigh Valley boys\u2019 basketball title in 35 years.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t easy \u2013 after leading by 19 in the second half, they found themselves trailing by one with 90 seconds left.\u00a0 The Vikes scored with 21 seconds left and fought off two Hickory bucket attempts to win 41-40.\u00a0 Head coach Dennis Csensits, his staff, and team ended the Lehigh Valley drought!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Despite all the upsets and a deplorable office pool, I am really enjoying March Madness. I am in awe of the amount of basketball talent on all these teams.\u00a0 College football playoffs always seem to have the same teams fighting for the overall championship, but, in contrast, a basket here, a free throw there, a missed call by the officials seems to decide so many games at the very end with so many upsets.\u00a0 The tournament has been as exciting as ever.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Did the signing of QB Joe Flacco this week excite the Eagles\u2019 fan base? The reaction is probably luke-warm, at best.\u00a0 He should be able to offer much needed seasoned advice to Jalen Hurts, who now appears to definitely have the job of starting QB.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiaeagles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eagles<\/a> have also through trades really helped their chances to significantly upgrade their draft picks, not this year, but next year.\u00a0 I guess the best advice for an Eagles\u2019 fan is to be patient, two words that never seem to be used together-\u201cpatient fan\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>If you are ready to watch baseball again, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/phillies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillies<\/a> should make a run at the NL East title, but the competition is very stiff.\u00a0 Every team in the division, the Mets, Braves, National, and the Marlins have all improved.\u00a0 This division should be a battle to the end.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafayette.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lafayette<\/a> hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.lehigh.edu\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lehigh<\/a> this weekend as the two teams will play for the 156<sup>th<\/sup> time in college football\u2019s most played rivalry.
