\n<\/span>In honor of Women\u2019s History Month, the Showplace will feature prominent female-driven classic programs and women who \u201cchanged the game\u201d and made a lasting impact in the Golden Age of Hollywood and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you ask a contemporary television viewer, \u201cWhere did Betty White get her big TV break,\u201d you probably would get different answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

She appeared as either a regular or recurring guest star on numerous shows through the 1960s and 70s in classic programs like, <\/span>The Mary Tyler Moore Show<\/a>, The Carol Burnett Show<\/a>, <\/i><\/b>Jack Parr\u2019s <\/span>Tonight Show <\/i><\/b><\/a>and as host of the annual California Rose Parade or the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Parade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Or it could be her numerous appearances on classic game shows like <\/span>I\u2019ve Got A Secret<\/a>, Match Game<\/a>, To Tell The Truth<\/a>, What\u2019s My Life<\/i><\/b> and also the program, <\/span>Password<\/i><\/b><\/a>, in which she married the host, Alan Ludden, in real life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But her big break came on the 1950s sitcom, <\/span>Life With Elizabeth<\/a>.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 The show was really a reimagining of a show called <\/span>Hollywood on Television<\/i><\/b><\/a>, for which White received her first Emmy Award nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n

The difference between the two shows was that White was co-owner of Brandy Productions, which bought the rights to the show.\u00a0 This move made White one of just two women (the other being Lucille Ball) who both starred in AND produced the program–giving her full control of the creative content.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elizabeth <\/i><\/b>was a unique show in that it consisted of three separate sketches on each show–all featuring White–and was extremely successful.\u00a0 The only reason the show was cancelled was because of a misguided idea that the show\u2019s distribution company thought the 65 episodes they had already produced would \u201coversaturate the market\u201d and devalue the show\u2019s syndication financial intake.<\/span><\/p>\n

White immediately found work in another groundbreaking show — the ABC fantasy-comedy, <\/span>Date With The Angels<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>She would go on to star in a number of early television shows, including two versions of a talk\/variety program with her name in the show\u2019s titles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Betty would also break down by being the first female offered a role on a primetime news show, NBC\u2019s <\/span>Today Show<\/i><\/b><\/a> — a position that was later filled by Barbara Walters.<\/span><\/p>\n

She would continue to be one of the first actresses to make regular appearances on the iconic talk show, <\/span>The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson<\/a>, <\/i><\/b>along with other popular talk shows, variety programs and game shows throughout the 60s and 70s.<\/span><\/p>\n

White would continue to star in television roles for the next several decades, starring in more recent programs like <\/span>The Golden Girls<\/a>, Golden Palace<\/a>, Hot In Cleveland <\/a><\/i><\/b>and a sitcom version of <\/span>The Betty White Show<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>She was also nominated for several guest starring roles well into her 80s in shows like <\/span>The Practice<\/a>, Boston Legal<\/a>, Modern Family <\/i><\/b>and was the host of the candid camera lookalike program, <\/span>Betty White\u2019s Off Their Rockers.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

She continued to break new ground by becoming the oldest person to ever host <\/span>Saturday Night Live <\/i><\/b><\/a>at the tender age of 88.\u00a0 She also voiced a toy tiger character two years ago in <\/span>Disney\\Pixar\u2019s Toy Story 4<\/a><\/i><\/b> after celebrating her 97th birthday.\u00a0 The role was ironic because White has spent most of her life as an advocate for quality animal health.\u00a0 She worked with and later chaired several organizations raising money for dogs and cats as well as zoo animals.<\/span><\/p>\n
