My research tells me that New Year\u2019s resolutions started 4,000 years ago with the Babylonians.\u00a0 They actually celebrated the New Year, but it was in mid-March.\u00a0 Promises were made to pay off debts, return borrowed objects, and offer loyalty to the king.<\/p>\n

In 46 BC, Julius Caesar declared a new calendar with January 1 as the first day of the New Year.\u00a0 Romans reflected back on the past year and promised they would conduct themselves properly in the coming year.<\/p>\n

Even today, it is estimated that about 45% say they make New Year\u2019s resolutions.\u00a0 Sadly, only around 8% say they are successful about achieving those goals.\u00a0 So I figured, what the heck, with 8% such a low bar, I would give it a shot:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Get the Covid vaccine<\/strong> when I am eligible. I assume everyone\u2019s goal is to get our lives back to some semblance of normality and I hope the vaccine accomplishes that.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Stop worrying about whether to retire or not<\/strong>. It will happen; I am prepared for it to happen; and I\u2019ll know when it should happen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Do not ask my wife, \u201cWhat\u2019s for dinner?\u201d<\/strong> She is so sick of hearing that question and I get it.\u00a0 We pretty much stopped asking, \u201cWhere should we go to eat?\u201d this past year.\u00a0 I want to say that more often in 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Get all the doctor checkups that are appropriate. <\/strong>Stop putting them off (another colonoscopy comes to mind).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. Plan vacations<\/strong>! It feels good just to type those words.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait to travel again.\u00a0 This past year allowed zero opportunities to get away.\u00a0 That has to end.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            1. Keep reading<\/strong>. Being stuck at home allowed for more diverse and more in-depth reading of newspapers, magazines, and books.\u00a0 I think I am smarter now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              1. Clean out the basement<\/strong>. I have more clothes than you can possibly imagine.\u00a0 We used to own a store and when we sold it, we brought home many of the store racks.\u00a0 I have found a way to fill them all.\u00a0 Despite giving away large amounts to charity every few months, they still seem to somehow multiply in the basement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                  \n
                1. Keep walking<\/strong>. My wife and I love to take walks.\u00a0 It at least gives me the illusion that I am exercising.\u00a0 You\u2019ll notice \u201cexercise more\u201d is not on the list.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                    \n
                  1. Start shopping again<\/strong>. I am so sick of the Covid wardrobe \u2013 sweat pants and a sweatshirt.\u00a0 I want some new clothes \u2013 I know, just go down in the basement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                      \n
                    1. Improve my golf game<\/strong> \u2013 okay, now I have gone too far. I have moved into the realm of the impossible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      So, there you have it \u2013 my goals for 2021.\u00a0 I do not have a lot of confidence I will join the 8%!<\/p>\n

                      ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

                      1. The Patriot League<\/a> basketball season got off to a rather ominous start with four Men\u2019s games and four Women\u2019s games postponed due to Covid in the first weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                          \n
                        1. Speaking of the Patriot League, there is an expression in sports that has become a clich\u00e9 \u2013 \u201cThat\u2019s why they play the game\u201d. That was never more accurate than this past weekend\u2019s games between Colgate<\/a> and Army<\/a>.\u00a0 On Saturday, at West Point, Colgate destroyed Army 101-57.\u00a0 On Sunday, in Hamilton, NY, Army beat Colgate 75-73.\u00a0 That\u2019s why they play the game.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                            \n
                          1. It is not often that my wife brings me a good sports story (like never). But this past week, there was an article in the Ukrainian Weekly (yes, she subscribes) about the massive impact Ukrainians have had on the NHL<\/a>.\u00a0 There is a documentary out called Uke<\/u><\/em> that gives the history of that impact.\u00a0 For example, 50 players of Ukrainian descent have hoisted the Stanley Cup.\u00a0 Only Canadians and Americans have more.\u00a0 Wayne Gretsky, who many believe was the greatest hockey player of all time, tells of his Ukrainian upbringing.\u00a0 There will be an English version and my wife and I will watch it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                              \n
                            1. The Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> will get the first pick for the NFL<\/a> draft. The assumption has been that it will be Clemson\u2019 QB Trevor Lawrence.\u00a0 But if you watched the Clemson<\/a>–Ohio State<\/a> game, you might think the better pick would be Ohio State QB Justin Fields.\u00a0 That night, Fields was better.\u00a0 The Eagles will pick sixth.<\/li>\n
                            2. And, finally, speaking of the Eagles<\/a>, I imagine the Giants<\/a> were very unhappy with Doug Pederson Sunday night in the Eagles\u2019 loss to the Redskins<\/a>. The Eagles had a chance to kick a tying field goal at one point and did not, failing to make a fourth down conversion.\u00a0 They also brought in third-string QB Nate Sudfeld in the fourth quarter in a 17-14 game.\u00a0 Washington won and will play in the playoffs, eliminating the Giants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
