{"id":83842,"date":"2020-07-13T17:40:30","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T17:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.web.rcn.net\/rcntv\/?p=83842"},"modified":"2023-04-14T19:29:43","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T19:29:43","slug":"kidding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astound.com\/atvn\/kidding\/","title":{"rendered":"Kidding Ourselves?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The views expressed in this blog are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of RCN or any other agency, organization, employer or company.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The dominoes are slowly falling on playing college football this fall.\u00a0 In March, if you recall, once college basketball was canceled and March Madness would not be held, the entire sports world \u2013 professional, college, and high school \u2013 all called it quits for the rest of the professional and academic year.\u00a0 It was rightfully determined that it was just not safe to play.<\/p>\n<p>Have things really changed since then?\u00a0 Sure there were signs that we just might be starting to win the battle as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were beginning to emerge from the horrible numbers they were experiencing in the first few months.\u00a0 We all believed everything could get better.<\/p>\n<p>But have things really gotten better?\u00a0 In states like Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, and Georgia we have seen examples of what can happen when we try so very hard to get back to a semblance of normalcy.\u00a0 It does not work.\u00a0 And what about the warnings that a second wave is imminent?\u00a0 The current circumstances are still part of Wave One!<\/p>\n<p>Playing sports, particularly football, this fall just does not seem to be right.\u00a0 Everyone agrees that a reduced schedule, a late start, and a plethora of restrictions need to be in place in order to have a chance for competition to occur.<\/p>\n<p>But, this is football.\u00a0 This is 22 players on the field with or without masks, without social distancing, barking out signals, sweating profusely, and creating contact on every play.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, this is everything we are currently being told NOT to do!<\/p>\n<p>Already, there have been setbacks.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/ivyleague.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ivy League<\/a> will play football in the spring.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Ten<\/a> will drop all of their independent games and may very well move their schedule to the spring.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/centennial.org\/landing\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centennial Conference<\/a>, which includes local colleges, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moravian.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moravian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhlenberg.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muhlenberg<\/a>, has already determined it will not play football or any other sport in the fall. \u00a0I am sure that those conferences that are holding out hope that there will be a season realize deep down that is probably not going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>So what will high school sports do?\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PIAA<\/a> is rather adamant that they want to play.\u00a0 I am just as adamant that I want them to play.\u00a0 But at the risk of what \u2013 the health and well-being of the young people they oversee.\u00a0 High school administrators do not have the luxury of postponing the fall season to the spring.\u00a0 Many, many high school athletes play a variety of sports in a given year, not just football.\u00a0 If there are no games this fall, there will be no games this year.\u00a0 High schools followed colleges when it came to canceling their spring sports.\u00a0 I suspect they will follow colleges again this fall.<\/p>\n<p>No one wants to see the return of athletic competition more than I do.\u00a0 Not only is it responsible for my vocation; it is also because of the love I have for sports.\u00a0 I hate the fact that a senior would not get the opportunity to play a final season.\u00a0 I hate the fact that parents would not revel in the trials and successes of their children.\u00a0 I also hate the fact that the victims of this awful virus had nothing to do with the cause.<\/p>\n<p>Sports did not cause the virus, but we do know what spreads the virus.\u00a0 Sadly, athletic competition could easily do that.\u00a0 If we do not believe that, then we are kidding ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redskins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Redskins<\/a> are in the midst of a marketing nightmare. Anytime a company wants to change their logo or nickname, it usually takes a couple of years to get that accomplished.\u00a0 New graphics, new clothing, new signage, etc. are all part of creating a new identity.\u00a0 Time is one thing, I suspect, the Washington franchise does not have.\u00a0 To keep their sponsors, they are almost forced to get rid of their nickname ASAP.\u00a0 That is not an easy task.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>No team was more distraught this past week than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiaeagles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a>. DeSean Jackson\u2019s anti-Semitic remarks created a \u201cshot heard \u2018round the world\u201d.\u00a0 His words were appalling and the response was immediate.\u00a0 I did find it somewhat comforting that some were willing to educate Jackson about his comments.\u00a0 If, indeed, they were said out of ignorance, then educating him is essential.\u00a0 He was punished by the team.\u00a0 Will the public forgive him?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>The Patriot League this week announced that there will be no fall sports. As you know, Lafayette and Lehigh have the distinction of being college football\u2019s most-played rivalry. This year would be the 156th time they would meet. Will it happen at all?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Due to quarantine regulations in Canada, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/bluejays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> players must not leave their hotel during their home games for the rest of the summer. If they do, they would face substantial fines and up to six months in jail.\u00a0 I expect many players will balk at this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/phillies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillies<\/a> will officially open their season on July 24 against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/marlins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marlins<\/a>.
