I have always considered myself to be an optimistic guy.\u00a0 My glass is almost always half full.\u00a0 The grass is rarely greener on the other side.\u00a0 Life is like a box of chocolates, most of the time.<\/p>\n

I am no longer optimistic.<\/p>\n

I would love to say that life will return to normal soon.\u00a0 It won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I would love to say that kids will return to school soon.\u00a0 They won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I would love to say we will see the return of professional winter sports (NBA<\/a>, NHL<\/a>) and the\u00a0 start of spring sports at all levels (high school, college, MLB<\/a>, PGA<\/a>), but,\u00a0 I fear, we won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The PIAA\u2019s<\/a> two-week moratorium on finishing out the winter season has come and gone.\u00a0 Their current silence on the matter means they are just not sure what to say.\u00a0 And I understand their dilemma.<\/p>\n

Despite the message the IOC<\/a> is putting forth, does anyone really believe the Olympics will take place this year?<\/p>\n

I would love to be looking forward to the 12-night cruise my wife and I had planned for early May.\u00a0 It was unique \u2013 fly to Florida, cruise to the Southern Caribbean and return to Bayonne, New Jersey.\u00a0 Despite hoping this will happen, I\u2019m pretty certain it won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I and my seven fellow golfers would love to be getting ready for the 16th<\/sup> consecutive year for our golf trip to the New Jersey shore \u2013 we call it the War at the Shore.\u00a0 Five days of golf, camaraderie and incessant busting on one another cannot happen if there are no golf courses to play.\u00a0 As a proper precaution, they are closed for business.<\/p>\n

I would love to have a sense that we are getting a handle on this thing, but I fear we are not.\u00a0 I feel for the businesses, the medical staffs, the unemployed and, most importantly, the sick who, I am quite sure, have also all lost their optimism.<\/p>\n

My glass still has liquid in it \u2013 not quite half \u2013 and my grass is<\/u> looking greener, so I am sure some day we will return to a sense of normalcy.\u00a0 I fear it will not be soon and the effects will certainly not be easy to overcome.<\/p>\n

To think otherwise would just be kidding ourselves.\u00a0 Please stay safe and healthy.<\/p>\n

ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. The only sports stories to report about right now are NFL<\/a> free agency and the NFL draft. It just doesn\u2019t seem right, however, to make this feel important.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. I worry about my daughters who are on the front line working with Lehigh Valley Hospital<\/a>. One does ultrasounds on about 20 patients every day and the other helped to organize the various testing centers for the virus around the Lehigh Valley.\u00a0 I am proud, but worried.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Our granddaughter is in New York, which the news is now saying is the \u201cepicenter\u201d of the virus. I trust she is making mature decisions!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. I just started John Feinstein\u2019s<\/a> new book, Back Roads to March<\/u>. It is about the smaller colleges that get a chance to participate in March Madness.\u00a0 Lafayette College<\/a> is featured at times.\u00a0 Ironically, I am not a fan of sports books, but I am a fan of good writing and John Feinstein is a very good writer and is always able to weave a good story.\u00a0 It\u2019s something to do while at home that feels like research for my work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          1. I watched the replay of the Lafayette-Lehigh<\/a> football game on Sunday morning. After doing the game, I never took the time to watch it.\u00a0 The RCN-TV crew did a great job.\u00a0 Lafayette won again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
