{"id":83448,"date":"2020-01-13T19:35:34","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T19:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.web.rcn.net\/rcntv\/?p=83448"},"modified":"2020-01-13T19:35:48","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T19:35:48","slug":"transfer-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astound.com\/atvn\/transfer-portal\/","title":{"rendered":"The Transfer Portal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>The views expressed in this blog are<\/em> <em>those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of RCN or any other agency, organization, employer or company.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of us who pay close attention to high school sports have complained vociferously about students transferring to other schools just for the sake of athletics.\u00a0 Community boundaries did not make much difference for those who wanted to play for a particular program or leave a program that was not successful.\u00a0 Many believed a son or daughter would get more exposure to college scouts by being a member of a winning team and that exposure could increase one\u2019s chances of landing a scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>This movement has caused the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.piaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PIAA<\/a> <\/strong>to try to find a solution to an ongoing problem.\u00a0 There has been plenty of discussion about boundary vs. non-boundary competition; residence requirements; mid-year movement, etc.\u00a0 Stay tuned for more rules followed by more complaining.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NCAA<\/a><\/strong> which regulates college athletics thinks they have a solution \u2013 it\u2019s called the \u201cTransfer Portal\u201d.\u00a0 It started in October, 2018.\u00a0 Any player in any sport who has interest in transferring from a school can now place their name into the transfer portal.\u00a0 All the student needs to do is go to the compliance department of their current college and say they want to be entered into the portal.\u00a0 Common courtesy would suggest a student-athlete should talk to their coach first, but that is not a requirement.\u00a0 Once the request is made, compliance has 48 hours to enter that student\u2019s name onto the portal.\u00a0 Once the name appears on the list, colleges can contact that student with permission from the student.\u00a0 A player does have the option of removing their name, but, for the most part, a coach will drop that student from their roster, or at the very least, retract their scholarship at the end of a semester as soon as they hear that student is looking to go elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind it was that the student should have more power in the decision-making process.\u00a0 It gives the athlete more options than they had before.\u00a0 Previously, the student had to be granted permission to contact another school.\u00a0 The list is supposed to remain private, used only by schools and student-athletes, but there most certainly have been leaks.<\/p>\n<p>The concept has become very popular for the athletes.\u00a0 It is speculated that there are over 500 Division 1 names in the portal right now.\u00a0 More than 15,000 have entered their names in the Transfer Portal since its inception.\u00a0 Compliance people love it because it eliminates a lot of paperwork.\u00a0 Most athletes love it because they now have freedom of movement, which they did not previously have.\u00a0 Coaches both love and hate it depending on whether they lose or acquire a player.<\/p>\n<p>The transfer drawback of being forced to sit out a year still exists in major sports like football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.\u00a0 There are waivers available which are treated on a case by case basis.<\/p>\n<p>This actually seems like a rational plan.\u00a0 And anything deemed \u201crational\u201d in sports these days is a positive step forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Andy Reid has been to only one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Super Bowl<\/a> as a head coach and we know what team that was. But with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patriots.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patriots<\/a> losing and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoreravens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ravens<\/a> losing before Sunday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chiefs<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstontexans.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texans<\/a>, it sure looked like he was guaranteed to head there for a second time.\u00a0 And then all \u201check\u201d broke loose and the Texans went up 24-0 into the second period.\u00a0 The Chiefs made mistake after mistake.\u00a0 But have you seen a team this year able to score points faster than the Chiefs?\u00a0 He told his players to \u201ckeep playing, keep battling\u201d.\u00a0 It worked; boy, did it ever.\u00a0 They scored the next 41 and ended the game with 51 points.\u00a0 Is this the year Coach Reid wins a Super Bowl?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeopardy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeopardy<\/a> is trying to pick the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) by pitting their three most successful players in competition against one another. The winner will be decided this week.\u00a0 The NFL is trying to do it by position and obviously without competition.\u00a0 An impossible task.\u00a0 Just look at the quarterback position \u2013 Unitas, Brady, Elway, P. Manning, Montana?\u00a0 Now move on to every position and start the argument. Please &#8211; no physical confrontations!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seahawks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle\u2019s<\/a> Marshawn Lynch and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Bay\u2019s<\/a> Aaron Rodgers exchanged jerseys after Sunday night\u2019s game. Both played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of California<\/a> in 2004 and almost became Packer teammates in 2010 when Buffalo traded Lynch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Kansas City is favored by seven in their game with Tennessee despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.titansonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Titans<\/a> winning 35-32 during the regular season. If you are looking for a team of destiny, choose the Titans.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.49ers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco<\/a> is favored by seven over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Packers<\/a>.\u00a0 That\u2019s odd since the 49ers led 23-0 at the half and won 37-8.\u00a0 They sacked Aaron Rodgers five times and held him to 104 yards passing.\u00a0 I cannot see any way the Packers win this one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>RCN-TV will bring you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehallcoplay.org\/Domain\/12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whitehall<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/becahi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bethlehem Catholic<\/a> basketball on Tuesday and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastonsd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Easton<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parklandsd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parkland<\/a> followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acchs.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Central Catholic<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freedom<\/a> on Friday night.
