\u00a0<\/strong>While I was away, the Eagles<\/a> played a preseason football game against the Tennessee Titans<\/a>.\u00a0 Normally, I would have very little interest in any of these games, particularly in the first one.<\/p>\n

However, a major event occurred that could affect the entire Eagles\u2019 season \u2013 backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld suffered a fractured wrist in his non-throwing hand.\u00a0 Doctors indicate he could be out for six weeks, which makes his return in late September.<\/p>\n

Every Eagles fan is well aware of the injury history of Carson Wentz.\u00a0 He is healthy now, but, in the NFL<\/a>, you are one play away from your season being over.\u00a0 Just look at last year.\u00a0 But, last year the Eagles had Nick Foles, who did a great job replacing Wentz.\u00a0 Foles is no longer on the team.\u00a0 He is now on the roster of the Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Every time there is a quarterback slot made available through injury, the name Colin Kaepernick comes to the forefront.\u00a0 He has not played since 2016.\u00a0 Is it worth taking the risk of alienating a large portion of the population by bringing in a talented player like Kaepernick?\u00a0 Will people ever forget he took a knee during the National Anthem to protest what he considered unjustified shootings of black Americans by the police?\u00a0 Philadelphia fans are not the most accepting in the league.\u00a0 If you thought booing Santa Claus was bad \u2026 (well, you finish the statement).<\/p>\n

And Kaepernick\u2019s story was back on the sports pages again this week when Race Imboden, who won a goal medal with two other USA teammates in the Pan Am foil competition, chose to take a knee during the National Anthem.\u00a0 \u201cWe must call for change,\u201d he said.\u00a0 He pointed out the areas of \u201cRacism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants\u201d were his major areas of concern.\u00a0 In protesting, however, he broke his commitment to the USA Pan Am teams to \u201crefrain from demonstrations that are political in nature\u201d.<\/p>\n

But, in every one of the stories about the Imboden protest, Colin Kaepernick\u2019s name is mentioned.\u00a0 The story will not die.<\/p>\n

So, it is my opinion that the Eagles will stick with Cody Kessler and Clayton Thorson as the back-ups for now and consider a number of other possibilities before giving much thought to bringing in Colin Kaepernick.\u00a0 Kaepernick just this week said that he continues to pursue an NFL job.\u00a0 He also continues to pay the price for doing what he considered to be the morally right thing to do.<\/p>\n

When you make that kind of commitment, you must be willing to pay the consequences.\u00a0 For Kaepernick, those consequences continue.\u00a0 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n

ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. If summer basketball tournaments are any indication, the winter EPC<\/a> season should be a very, very competitive one.\u00a0 Allen, Easton, Emmaus, Freedom, Northampton, etc. all had special moments on the outdoor courts.\u00a0 I can wait, though, because high school football looks to be just as interesting.<\/li>\n
  2. There obviously are no summer football games, but looking at Freedom<\/a>, Emmaus<\/a>, Parkland<\/a>, Easton<\/a> and the rest of the league, it appears that Friday night football (with a sprinkling of Saturday games) should make for a great season.\u00a0 So I can\u2019t wait for those games to start.<\/li>\n
  3. Speaking of the start of high school football, we will have our traditional Colonial League<\/a> opener on August 23 when Notre Dame<\/a> hosts Northwestern<\/a>.\u00a0 Not only should the game be a good one, but Notre Dame will be dedicating their stadium to Deacon Anthony Koury.\u00a0 He was a great friend as AD and is most deserving of the honor.<\/li>\n
  4. In the \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be kidding\u201d department, the Phillie Phanatic technically becomes a free agent next year and could be taken from the Phillies<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a court case for sure.<\/li>\n
  5. John Leone\u2019s blog last week, which filled my space perfectly, noted that John recently retired from Lafayette College<\/a>.\u00a0 Rest assured he has not retired from the RCN-TV broadcasting team.\u00a0 He will still sit alongside Chris Michael on Friday nights and be on the sideline for our Lafayette football games and alongside me for Lafayette basketball.\u00a0 We won\u2019t let John retire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
