You may have missed it, but at the Big Ten media day this past week, Jim Harbaugh<\/a>, the coach of Michigan football<\/a>, threw a little dirt at former Ohio State<\/a> coach Urban Meyer.\u00a0 He acknowledged Meyer\u2019s excellent coaching record, but added that \u201ccontroversy follows everywhere he\u2019s been.\u201d\u00a0 He was given a chance to back away from what he said but he did not.\u00a0 \u201cIt was me saying what I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, that led to a response from Meyer\u2019s daughter \u2013 \u201cWait guys, maybe this is a deflection strategy!\u00a0 Throw a little mud to avoid answering why you always lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

This led me to think about the nastiest rivalries in college sports.\u00a0 I was not surprised to find that the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry was listed as #1.\u00a0 They have met 100 times with Michigan winning 58 of them.\u00a0 However, Ohio State has won the last seven and 14 of the last 15!\u00a0 Ohio State won last year 62-39.<\/p>\n

According to Brad Crawford of 24-7 Sports,<\/em> the top ten college rivalries are:<\/p>\n

10. Michigan<\/a>–Michigan State<\/a> basketball<\/p>\n

9. Michigan-Notre Dame<\/a> football<\/p>\n

8. Notre Dame-USC<\/a> football<\/p>\n

7. Florida State<\/a>–Miami<\/a> football<\/p>\n

6. Kentucky<\/a>–Louisville<\/a> basketball<\/p>\n

5. Oklahoma<\/a>–Texas<\/a> football<\/p>\n

4. Army<\/a>–Navy<\/a> football<\/p>\n

3. Alabama<\/a>–Auburn<\/a> football<\/p>\n

2. North Carolina<\/a>–Duke<\/a> basketball<\/p>\n

1. Ohio State-Michigan football<\/p>\n

Obviously, rabid fans of all these schools disagreed with the list. I found it interesting when I read the comments from fans across the country that their argument that they have the greatest rivalry was based on the fact that their hatred for the other team was greater than the hatred of other fans.\u00a0 Yes, it was all based on hate!<\/p>\n

And then I realized that this is the way our country is today \u2013 hatred for the other side.\u00a0 There is a rivalry going on every day in this country and the vitriol when groups get together en masse is not much different than sitting on opposite sides of the stadium for an Ohio State-Michigan.\u00a0 In football, there is always next year for the loser.<\/p>\n

In politics, it\u2019s a four-year wait.\u00a0 So the hate grows more and more.<\/p>\n

  1. I guess it was only appropriate that the greatest \u201ccloser\u201d in major league baseball was the closer on Sunday at Cooperstown, NY for the Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> induction ceremony. Mariano Rivera<\/a> of the Yankees<\/a> gave the final speech.\u00a0 After all, he was the greatest closer in baseball history.\u00a0 Brandy Halladay handled her moment and her emotions beautifully as the Hall inducted her husband, Roy<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Did you see where Carl Yastrzemski\u2019s<\/a> grandson, Mike<\/a>, homered for the Giants<\/a> on Sunday to give them a walk-off win in the 12th<\/sup> inning? He was called up for the first time to the majors on May 25.\u00a0 He spent six years in the minors.\u00a0 He is 28 years old.<\/li>\n
  3. Fate can be very interesting sometimes. Ireland\u2019s Shane Lowry<\/a> winning The Open<\/a> on Sunday in Ireland, just a couple of hours from his home was storybook.\u00a0 He was never challenged to relinquish the lead and his walk up the 18th<\/sup> hole was very emotional.\u00a0 If you are going to win your first major, why not do it at home?<\/li>\n
  4. The South Parkland American Legion basebal<\/a>l team is having an unbelievable season. As I write this, they are 23-0 and two wins away from a Region 2 championship.\u00a0 The Bethlehem Wanderers<\/a> are still in the tournament, also, with a 22-4 record.\u00a0 Amazing seasons for both and not quite finished.\u00a0 It would be nice if they met in the championship final.<\/li>\n
  5. Our BML<\/a> Game of the Week series concludes this Tuesday.
