For most fathers, Father\u2019s Day is a special weekend.\u00a0 My family celebrated on Saturday and it was a wonderful day.\u00a0 The celebration continued into Sunday like it does every year for me because that is when the US Open Golf Championship<\/a> is decided.<\/p>\n

Much of the time when I play these days, it is in a charity tournament. Ninety-percent of the time the format of the tournament is a \u201cscramble\u201d.\u00a0 This means after everyone hits, your group takes the best shot and everyone plays from there.\u00a0 That process continues until the ball is in the hole.\u00a0 Because we are always playing the best shot, it is not unusual, unlike when one plays their own ball, to get pars and birdies.\u00a0 This allows one\u2019s team to get scores much like the pros.<\/p>\n

So Sunday, I am camped in my recliner watching the golf and being amazed by the shots of eventual winner Brooks Koepka<\/a>.\u00a0 He is making birdie after birdie on the back nine and he even threw in an eagle. \u00a0My wife, supposedly reading the Sunday paper and playing games on her phone, seemed to become very interested in the leader.\u00a0 \u201cHe certainly goes to the gym\u201d, she offered up and I now realize she is suddenly interested in golf.\u00a0 This is as rare as a snowstorm in July.<\/p>\n

Then she opines, \u201cWhy do they call the scores pars, birdies, or eagles?\u201d\u00a0 No one ever asked me that before.\u00a0 I know what they are; I do not know their origin.\u00a0 So I decided to find out.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure she really wanted to know, but now I did.<\/p>\n

It turns out a man named Hugh Rotherham in 1890 standardized the number of shots a golfer should take at each hole.\u00a0 This score eventually became a \u201cbogey\u201d named after the Bogey man, a goblin or devil.<\/p>\n

Par was derived from the American stock exchange term which is a stock\u2019s normal figure.\u00a0 Par was actually used before bogey, but Americans did not like the British system and began referring to one over par as a bogey.<\/p>\n

\u201cBirdie\u201d was an American slang term meaning excellent.\u00a0 It originated at the Atlantic City Country Club in 1903 and meant one under par.\u00a0 A stone on the course signifies the origin (I\u2019ve played there and have seen the rock below):<\/p>\n

\"birdie\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cEagle\u201d just became an extension of the bird theme and came about shortly after \u201cbirdie\u201d came into vogue. \u00a0\u00a0It meant two under par.\u00a0 The extremely rare three under par was named after a very rare bird \u2013 an \u201calbatross\u201d.<\/p>\n

So now I know the origin of the terms and I will tell my wife to read this blog.\u00a0 I just have a feeling that if the blog does not include a picture of Brooks Koepka, she might not be all that interested.<\/p>\n

ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. I\u2019ve had it with the pace of Major League baseball. Pitchers take too much time; batters step out of the box too often; managers make too many trips to the mound and there are too many pitching changes.\u00a0 Throw in a 17-inning game from time to time and baseball becomes excruciatingly slow.\u00a0 I hope the rules \u201cthey are a-changin\u2019\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. It looks like the \u201c76ers<\/a>\u201d are going to get a first-round draft pick. It appears that Washington <\/a>point guard Markelle Fultz<\/a> will be the selection.\u00a0 A great point guard could actually make them competitive.\u00a0 Dare a Philadelphia fan get one\u2019s hopes up?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Ever since her UConn <\/a>days, I always loved watching Diana Taurasi<\/a> play basketball. Her talent and enthusiasm were what made her stand out.\u00a0 She just seemed to love the game.\u00a0 This past Sunday she became the all-time leading scorer in WNBA <\/a>history.\u00a0 After Sunday\u2019s game, she had scored 7,504 points.\u00a0 Amazing!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        1. Watching golf on FOX <\/a>is still not the same as the Golf Channel<\/a>, NBC<\/a>, or CBS<\/a>. Joe Buck had an awkward moment<\/a> when Brooks Koepka kissed a girl after he won the US Open and Buck incorrectly identified her as Koepka\u2019s former<\/span> girlfriend. \u00a0The young lady was his new<\/span> girlfriend.\u00a0 It was later corrected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          P.S.\u00a0 FOX is much better than they were the first two years.\u00a0 However, there is still room for growth.<\/p>\n

          1. Watch the Blue Mountain League Game of the Week<\/a> every Tuesday night at 9:30 PM.\u00a0 On Friday, June 23, you can watch the Senior Baseball League on RCN at 9:30 PM.\u00a0 That game will be from Sam Balliet Stadium.\u00a0 It\u2019s always nice to go back there.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
