{"id":78168,"date":"2016-05-02T18:26:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T18:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sandbox.web.rcn.net\/rcntv\/?p=78168"},"modified":"2023-04-11T19:37:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T19:37:40","slug":"sportstalk-shop-eaglesredskins-draft-grades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astound.com\/atvn\/sportstalk-shop-eaglesredskins-draft-grades\/","title":{"rendered":"The SportsTalk Shop:  Eagles\/Redskins Draft Grades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DArFMAgqF-w\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I know one of last year\u2019s \u201cSportsTalk Shop\u201d blogs that drew the most feedback on my part was my analysis following the NFL draft, with thoughts on both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philadelphiaeagles.com\/\">Eagles <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redskins.com\/\">Redskins<\/a>\u2019 selections.\u00a0 I hope I\u2019m up to the challenge again this year as we take a look at both teams\u2019 efforts last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REDSKINS: 1<sup>st<\/sup> ROUND<\/strong><br \/>\nThere were a couple ways the Redskins could have gone.\u00a0 There was a plethora of defensive lineman\/linebackers available (including several from Alabama) that Washington could have selected to fill some holes.\u00a0 They could have moved down to accumulate talent.\u00a0 Or, they could have gone for a flashing wide receiving name like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/draft\/2016\/profiles\/laquon-treadwell?id=2555214\">Laquon Treadwell<\/a> to groom to potentially replace <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/11283\/desean-jackson\">DeShawn Jackson<\/a> after his contract expires at the end of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>However, they went with a less flashy, but probably better all-around receiver in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/joshdoctson\/2555343\/profile\">Josh Doctson<\/a> from TCU.\u00a0 While Treadwell and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/willfuller\/2555346\/profile\">Will Fuller<\/a> received more pre-draft hype while a few national mock drafts didn\u2019t even have Doctson going in the first round, many people I talked with thought Doctson was the best receiver in the NFL Draft.\u00a0 The multi-sport athlete has overcome some adversity during his high school and college careers (one story includes his mother reportedly wanted him to quite football after breaking his collar bone in a scrimmage when he was 16 years old).\u00a0 With multiple picks remaining and several more defensive options seemingly available for the later rounds (and the fact Washington actually traded down a spot to get him), I\u2019d give the \u2018Skins an\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EAGLES: 1<sup>ST<\/sup> ROUND<\/strong><br \/>\nPhiladelphia followed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therams.com\/\">Rams <\/a>by making a major move up to secure a \u201cfranchise\u201d quarterback in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/carsonwentz\/2555259\/profile\">Carson Wentz<\/a>.\u00a0 While a final, definitive decision on whether this was a good move or not won\u2019t be known for a while, you had to give Vice President of Football Operation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philadelphiaeagles.com\/team\/staff\/howie-roseman\/930d39c9-7d61-4bd3-b061-85b8656e793e\">Howie Roseman<\/a> credit for being aggressive and, at least on the surface, making an apparent good deal.<\/p>\n<p>Wentz rated high in all the off-season activities, camps, interviews, et al, and even though he did not play for a major Division I-A school, it seems like they rolled the dice on a quality prospect.\u00a0 Wentz has the physical skills, a good head on his shoulders and, if <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/13197\/sam-bradford\">Sam Bradford<\/a> returns to the team, the time to be able to get up to speed of the pro game.\u00a0 If he turns out to be two-thirds of what some Eagles fans are currently dreaming about\u2026?<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 A-<\/strong> \u00a0(they gave up a huge amount in draft picks with a number of holes yet to fill)<\/p>\n<p><strong>REDSKINS: 2<sup>nd<\/sup> &amp; 3rd ROUNDS<\/strong><br \/>\nWashington needed help at corner and on the outside linebacker positions, and grabbed two excellent players in hybrid LB <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/su'acravens\/2555345\/profile\">Su&#8217;a Cravens<\/a> (USC) and DB <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/kendallfuller\/2555349\/profile\">Kendall Fuller<\/a> (Virginia Tech).<\/p>\n<p>Fuller is a great young corner with speed who could make an impact with the \u2018Skins this fall. \u00a0I remember watching him two years ago and thought then he could be a later first-round option in the draft (before he was injured last year). \u00a0I really believed\u00a0the Eagles could have really benefitted by selecting the DMV native and Good Counsel alum and, quite frankly, I\u2019m shocked they didn&#8217;t select him, which makes this an even better pick for their division rivals.<\/p>\n<p>To be completely honest, I had to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\">NFL.com<\/a> to look up more details on Cravens and don&#8217;t recall even watching him play on TV, but what I did find online did impress me.\u00a0 He comes from a long pro-football lineage and there&#8217;s nothing I found to suggest he wasn&#8217;t a very solid pick at the 53rd spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EAGLES: 2<sup>nd<\/sup> &amp; 3rd ROUNDS<\/strong><br \/>\nComing into the draft, I felt that the Eagles needed to add at least one higher-end cornerback or safety. \u00a0After all, they probably need at least two, if not\u00a0three, quality defensive backs if this team seriously wants to contend this fall&#8211;something they apparently think they&#8217;re capable of, since they committed\u00a0$36 million to non-quarterbacks-of-the-future. \u00a0After not getting enough depth via free agency (nice job picking up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/joshnorman\/2532920\/profile\">Josh Norman<\/a>, Washington, by the way), the Eagles clearly had to select someone to help\u00a0the latter-half of their defensive with their next couple picks after Wentz.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, Chip Kelly&#8217;s bone-headed move (or one of them) to trade for Sam Bradford prevented the Birds from a second-round pick in this year&#8217;s draft.\u00a0 \u00a0And I know the\u00a0prevailing wisdom (and usually my personal preference) is to draft the &#8220;best available&#8221; options\u00a0in which\u00a0you are presented (something they clearly did NOT do when they drafted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/marcussmith\/2543725\/profile\">Marcus Smith<\/a> two years ago). \u00a0However, to pass on Kendall Fuller, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/nickvigil\/2555528\/profile\">Nick Vigil<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/brandonwilliams\/2541302\/profile\">Brandon Williams<\/a>\u00a0is inexcusable for Roseman &amp; Co.<\/p>\n<p>I like Guard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/isaacseumalo\/2555495\/profile\">Isaac Seumalo<\/a> a lot (even though he needs to improve on his pass protection\u2014according to CBS Sports&#8211;which is a concern if true).\u00a0 However, to not select one of the available corners or safeties in the third round or at least try to try to move up to get another pick was a big mistake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 C+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>REDSKINS: LATER ROUNDS<\/strong><br \/>\nThere was speculation that the Redskins might try to target an early-to-mid-round quarterback as insurance in case<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/14880\/kirk-cousins\"> Kirk Cousins<\/a> regresses this fall. \u00a0However, quarterback\u00a0Nate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/natesudfeld\/2555427\/profile\">Sudfeld <\/a>is probably not a guy who will make Washington fans chant his name if Cousins struggles this fall.<\/p>\n<p>I do like some of the selections made elsewhere in the later rounds. \u00a0I love Temple product <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/draft\/2016\/profiles\/matthew-ioannidis?id=2555240\">Matt Ioannidis<\/a> to add depth along the defensive line (full disclosure: yes, I am a Temple University grad). \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/keithmarshall\/2555459\/profile\">Keith Marshall<\/a> might help out on special teams and as a later-option running back.\u00a0 The Redskins added a nice piece with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/stevendaniels\/2555521\/profile\">Steven Daniels<\/a>. \u00a0I saw him play a couple games at Boston College&#8211;he hits hard\u00a0and impressed me against the run. \u00a0Daniels\u00a0might actually contribute in limited opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EAGLES: LATER ROUNDS<\/strong><br \/>\nStill no defensive backs&#8230;until the 196th\u00a0(sixth round)\u00a0pick? Really? \u00a0Is Chip Kelly still in charge here?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/blakecountess\/2556374\/profile\">Blake Countess<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/jalenmills\/2555383\/profile\">Jalen Mills<\/a> are nice pieces, and the reports say they could play both safety and cornerback. \u00a0They did offer additional support with Running Back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/wendellsmallwood\/2555461\/profile\">Wendell Smallwood<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Offensive Lineman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/halapoulivaativaitai\/2555196\/profile\">Halapoulivaati Vaitai<\/a>\u00a0to help Wentz (when he&#8217;s ready), but the Eagles are still one, or two, or maybe three quality D-back options short and still lack depth at middle linebacker. \u00a0I know you can solve every problem through the draft.\u00a0 I also get the argument that they wanted to add a couple O-line pieces as protection for the quarterback, but there were\/are additional decent offensive line options still available to add depth.\u00a0 And did they HAVE to draft another player from Oregon?<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADE:\u00a0 D+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FINAL GRADES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>REDSKINS: A-\u00a0 <\/strong>(Solid moves all around, taking best-available players in nearly every case while upgrading several positions that needed to be addressed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>EAGLES:\u00a0 C\u00a0 <\/strong>(Cornerback? \u00a0Safety? \u00a0Middle linebacker? \u00a0Bueller?)<\/p>\n<p>Your comments, complains, opinions are most welcome via email: <a href=\"mailto:rcnsportstalk@rcn.com\">rcnsportstalk@rcn.com<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know one of last year\u2019s \u201cSportsTalk Shop\u201d blogs that drew the most feedback on my part was my analysis following the NFL draft, with thoughts on both the Eagles and Redskins\u2019 selections.\u00a0 I hope I\u2019m up to the challenge again this year as we take a look at both teams\u2019 efforts last weekend.
