{"id":76156,"date":"2014-11-19T13:41:11","date_gmt":"2014-11-19T13:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sandbox.web.rcn.net\/rcntv\/?p=76156"},"modified":"2023-04-14T19:43:43","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T19:43:43","slug":"sportstalk-shop-non-football-fall-sports-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astound.com\/atvn\/sportstalk-shop-non-football-fall-sports-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"The SportsTalk Shop:  Non-Football Fall Sports Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While high school football is extremely popular in Eastern Pennsylvania, there was a plethora of great athletic accomplishments achieved by boys and girls in many different sports this fall season.\u00a0 On our \u201cRCN SportsTalk\u201d show, we highlighted many of these outstanding programs this past year and we\u2019d also like to add more honors in today\u2019s blog entry.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a sampling of the great non-football Lehigh Valley sports stories that took place.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a surprise the Saucon Valley boys soccer team captured this year\u2019s District XI 2A title\u2014they were one of the preseason favorites, but the girls\u2019 team relished the role of underdogs all season long and joined the boys in action on championship day before falling to Northwestern.\u00a0 The Panthers\u2019 program was just one of the top soccer squads in the area.\u00a0 Here\u2019s some interviews with local coaches and athletes on their fall teams.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X6wY6zzYjm8\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Southern Lehigh turned in a great storyline in its win over Emmaus in the District 3A soccer final.\u00a0 The Spartans, led by long-time coach Terry Nevill, who announced he was stepping down after this season, turned in a run few soccer fans will forget anytime soon.\u00a0 The Spartans defeated the teams ranked first, second and third en route to the championship.\u00a0 The win marked the first time in Nevill\u2019s career that he won a 3A title.<\/p>\n<p>An exciting season for girls\u2019 volleyball fans ended with very few surprises, as four of the most dominating programs &#8211; Parkland, Emmaus, Bethlehem Catholic and Notre Dame &#8211; advanced to the district finals.\u00a0 We caught up with the ladies from the Trojans and Hornets to talk with them about their season and on facing each other four times this season.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wQ-IVxlZa8o\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Whitehall girls\u2019 soccer team captured another District XI championship by beating Nazareth.\u00a0 The Zephyrs\u2019 program, one of the last \u201cbig schools\u201d to form a girls\u2019 soccer team in Lehigh County, has established itself as one of the premiere programs in the region.\u00a0 We highlighted Kourtney Cunningham (who scored the game winner in the district final) and her sisters playing two fall sports at the same time on a recent \u201cSportsTalk\u201d show.\u00a0 Whitehall\u2019s field hockey program was also strong once again this year, as was Nazareth, Northampton, Parkland and others, but perennial state qualifier (and often state champ) Emmaus once again won the District XI 3A title.<\/p>\n<p>The Easton cross country team became just the second Lehigh Valley team ever to sweep the 3A District Title in their sport.\u00a0 The Northwestern girls\u2019 program (guests on \u201cSportsTalk\u201d this past fall) had another successful season as they shared 2A honors with Central Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>The local tennis scene might have had the biggest news of them all.\u00a0 The Parkland girls\u2019 team that had gone years without a league loss, suffered a few defeats in what turned out to be a \u201cretooling\u201d year for the Trojans in the new Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.\u00a0 Several teams that had some success in previous years rose to new heights this fall.\u00a0 We had a chance to interview some of the top girls\u2019 tennis players in the area, including the District XI\u2019s doubles pairings.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ur6cG0oQ3ts\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And it was a win-win fall season for Emmaus coach Mike Mihalik.\u00a0 His team not only won a District XI 3A golf title for the second consecutive year, but he was also unanimously approved by the East Penn School Board to be named the new head coach of the highly successful Hornets baseball program, succeeding longtime skipper John Schreiner.\u00a0 Mihalik was a former Parkland graduate who spent time pitching in several minor league affiliates after originally being drafted by the Phillies.<\/p>\n<p>We welcome you to post or email (<a href=\"mailto:rcnsportstalk@rcn.com\">rcnsportstalk@rcn.com<\/a>) other fall sports team or individual highlights to us.
