2013 is upon us, so I thought I would take one last look at the top 10 national sports stories, in my opinion, for 2012:<\/span><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tiger Woods wins again, but not very often.<\/span><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Peyton Manning released by the Colts; he has a great year with the Broncos.<\/span><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Gabby Douglas make the London Olympic Games very special.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lance Armstrong stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles by the US Anti-Doping Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Replacement refs in the NFL \u2013 How did that work out?\u00a0 They were replaced after Week 3 debacle with Green Bay and Seattle. <\/span><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck become the most exciting rookies to play in the NFL in a long, long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Notre Dame ends college football\u2019s regular season #1, undefeated, and <\/span>becomes a very relevant football program once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lehigh beats Duke in NCAA basketball (enough said).\u00a0 Kentucky wins <\/span>championship with freshmen and sophomores.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 College football playoffs in the BCS are approved for 2014. Top four teams \u00a0will compete.\u00a0 You just know it will expand in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the #1 story:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. 1.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NCAA imposes on Penn State a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl ban, a reduction of scholarships, imposes a five-year probation, and vacates all wins from 1998-2011.\u00a0 Overkill?\u00a0 Joe Paterno dies.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    ABOVE THE EARS (SOME MUSINGS)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    1.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On Sunday night in Washington, do you think there was more interest in the \u201cfiscal cliff\u201d or the Washington-Dallas NFL football game?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    2.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All four Wild Card games this coming weekend look like tossups to me.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    3.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Having done four high school basketball games before the holiday break, I think this might be a very, very competitive and exciting year.\u00a0 Although, looking back, I think I say that every year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    4.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Happy New Year to everyone, but especially to Mike Joseph, John Leone, Tom Stoudt, Scott Barr, and John Bowman!\u00a0 I spend a great deal of time in the booths and at courtside with those guys and thoroughly enjoy their company each time!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    5.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 2012, I lost my 97-year-old mother and my 96-year-old father-in-law.\u00a0 There will be a large void in 2013.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
